David R. Sands today features Cuba in his 'Washington Times' chess article. He's obviously taking the narrower 'New World' definition of "Western Hemisphere" when he ranks Cuba #2 therein.

They certainly seem to be ahead of Canada. In the 8 Olympiads from the year 2000 forward we have finished higher than Cuba once. It's not hardly fair to lump us in with Cuba. We're more comparable with Mexico.

In the so-called 'New World' countries, FIDE has (world ranking in parentheses):

      1. United States (4)
      2. Cuba (18)
      3. Argentina (30)
      4. Brazil (33)
      5. Peru (35)
      6. Canada (40)
      7. Chile (54)
      8. Columbia (56)
      9. Mexico (58)
      10. Venezuela (60)

Yes. Canada is closer to Mexico in strength than to Cuba. Cuba sometimes makes the top 10 at the chess Olympiad.

I once played a 2nd cousin of J.R. Capablanca in CC. Tim Harding published the game in his magazine.

Why 'so-called New World countries' - I was under the impression that the standard (admittedly Eurocentric) definition was North and South America. Maybe Australia and New Zealand should be included?

Here's the Wikipedia entry on Western Hemisphere, Ken.
