  • Top 100 Juniors

Now that all the 1994 births have lost their Junior status, which included 3 of the top 4 spots (Giri, Yu, Hou), Razvan Preotu is now ranked in FIDE's 'Top 100 Juniors'. Razvan is currently ranked #76 in the Janurary list.

And if you include only those juniors who will be under 16 this year you get the following list with Razvan #17

Excellent work, Vlad, bumping Razvan 59 slots (:

An interesting question is where he'll be on the Top 100 Junior list 12 months hence. There are 26 Juniors born in 1995 who are currently ranked above Razvan. Naturally, they all lose their Junior status in a year's time, meaning Razvan gravitates to #50. And given the 'k' factor favours those less than 18 years of age, there's an excellent chance he'll move even higher. Of course, the 18 names you cite all share the same 'k' advantage, as do the 9 others above Razvan born in 1998.

Incidentally, I guess it's one down and eleven to go in our little 2800 bet. I am a tad worried however that Topalov continues to refuse to risk his 2800 status. I was rather counting on him NOT staying at or above 2800. But if he doesn't play, that can't happen ):

Not to worry about Topolov not playing - he's registered for Gibralter at the end of this month.
Also, I'm not counting on Topolov to win my bet - there're Giri and Kramnik lurking in the wings. :D

If you think Giri is going to do well at Tata Steel, Vlad, you can get 9/1 odds on him winning that event (:

It's probably a good bet at those odds, Jack, but I'm looking at the big picture - if you look at Giri's rating graph for 2014, you would see a straight line improvement for the year going from 2734 to 2784 - a 50 point rise. Where would another 50 points put him? Hmmmm?

Actually, I would very muck like Giri at 9/1 IF Aronian and Hou weren't among the 14, Vlad. Giri has never lost to Carlsen in 6 classical matches, plus 1 and equal 5 and is dead even against Caruana, plus 2, minus 2, equal 8. But he's an abysmal plus zero, minus 4, equal 4 against Aronian and also winless against the Women's World Champion in 5 matches, 2 losses and 3 draws. Go figure! (:

Speaking of Aronian, Vlad, he hasn't been in form for awhile now, but is a 4 time winner of this event (2007, 2008, 2012, 2014) so could well regain his 2800 status here ):
