  • Gibraltar 2015

As Tata Steel ends tomorrow, Gibraltar starts Tuesday with an impressive lineup which includes Eric Hansen and Kevin Spraggett as the 39th and 51st seeds respectively. And I would be remiss to overlook the 125th seed, Viktor Plotkin, as well as the 187th seed, Jonathan Yu, 210th seed, Lali Agbabishvili, and 231st seed, Ian Mahoney. I guess we're one short of a 'magnificent seven' (:

      Hi Jack,

Apart from the ones you mentioned above, if you want a magnificent seven, Hart House will also be rooting for Bill Kim, listed # 226 as Yongjoo Kim. He did his undergrad degree at UT and now studies in USA. Bill is however listed under the Korean Federation.

I'll be happy to join the rooting section, Alex. Bill has played in a couple of tournaments of late with Pi and Zehn albeit they've yet to meet over the board. So which of the magnificent seven in Sturges' classic 1960 film (based upon the even more classic Kurosawa film, Seven Samurai) does Bill play? (:

While pairings are not as yet posted for the R1 Tuesday games, with 244 players it should be #1 vs #123, etc. That would mean Viktor Plotkin would get paired with the #2 seed, Hikaru Nakamura (:

Right now the only Canadian game going is that of Lali Agbabishvili - black on board 17 in the Challengers event. See live on ChessBomb >>>>

Since many of the players in the field are playing in the Challengers, the Round 1 pairings in the Main event will be quite different, Jack.

              SYSTEM FAIL!! ALERT
All games in the Challengers are frozen at about move 12, showing one of the players with time expired.
Although computers are capable of 3300 level chess, it seems the programmers are still at the 1300 level.

And in the top section, if the Chess Results listing is accurate with 150 entries, then Victor Plotkin, #124 will be paired with #49 GM Kayden Troff 2541 - barely missing #50 Kevin Spraggett !

I think we're both wrong, Vlad. Chess-Results is still listing 244 (showing 150 but with the option to click on the full list), but that list obviously includes those in the Challengers since Lali is listed therein as #209. I guess we'll find out soon enough what the pairings might be (:

                    Re: Gibraltar 2015

There doesn't appear to be a betting line on Gibraltar which I find unfortunate. That could have been a whole lot of fun in a field this size. Marathon is already posting a line on Grenke which doesn't start for a week but is silent on Gibraltar ):

Speaking of Grenke, if I thought Aronian was the least bit primed to regain his form, I'd certainly like him at 57/10, but Levon has been in a steady decline the past several months, now only 2 points above the #11 ranked player, MVL. It's hard to imagine Levon falling out of the Top 10 but that's clearly a distinct possibility now ):

3 Canadians seem to be playing in the Challengers A. Lali Agbabishvili, Jonathan Yu and Mike Dougherty, round start times at 9:45am! Woot, lots of chess, some days will have two games.

Could not find Dougherty on the pairings.
Also, Plotkin is playing on the last board. He barely missed Topalov :-( That would have been awesome.

I seem to recall that Mike Dougherty said he was playing in the lower section as the games are staggered with the times of the main event - so he could play his games and then spectate the main.
Others may have chosen to play in both in order to have an intense chess week!
Why Spraggett was not paired is a mystery - travel problems? - illness? - swiss gambit? LOL

Nakamura is certainly being classic Nakamura today (:

His first 2 moves were 1. ...f5 and 2. ...c6 and has followed that with 6 consecutive Queen moves! (:
