As some of you may know, last year a law was passed some time last year making it illegal to send commercial emails to people without explicit permission from them. As a result, Victoria Chess has taken to asking as part of it's online registration process if people want emails relating to chess.
Specifically, we ask if they want:
a) emails from the CFC for the CFC email magazine
b) emails from the BCCF to receive the BCCF email bulletin
c) emails from Victoria Chess about upcoming Victoria Chess tournaments.
you can see the actual text by looking at for example, the GPO online registration form http://www.victoriachess.com/registration/gpo/
Note that negative option choices (e.g. assuming that the response is yes) is also illegal.
For now, our policy is that anyone who is already on our email lists will continue to get emails but for new people, we will use the choices indicated when registering. (not taking a blank response as an actual request to take name off the relevant email list - people may consider that they have already given permission to receive the relevant emails or just skip over this portion of the registration). (we also ask for the player's email as distinct from the email of the person paying the bill).
Some interesting stats from our first significant event with this formal (the BC Open) are given below.
out of 74 pre-registered entries: (including one eventual withdrawal)
- 70 registered & paid online using our online registration (95%) 6 or 7 years ago when we started using online registration, the number was something like 60%. Of the four who did not pay online, 2 of those are myself & Paul Leblanc (the organizers of the event) and we pay cash directly.
of the 70 online registrations:
41 selected no email options (59%)
31 selected emails from the CFC (44%)
37 selected emails from the BCCF (53%)
30 selected emails from Victoria Chess (43%)
Possibly, a better view is looking at those who selected at least one email option:
of the 39 registrations that selected at least one email option
CFC 31/39 or 79%
BCCF 37/39 or 95%
VC 30/39 or 77%
Anyway you slice it though, there are plenty of people who don't want to get emails, including online delivery of the CFC magazine.
