  • Nakamura reaches 2800

Naka and Giri are the latest to reach 2800, numbers 9 and 10 in the club. Hikaru reached it with a nice win against Karjakhin (crazy tactics) and now leads Zurich.

As you say, Hans, Giri and Nakamura are the 9th and 10th players ever to surpass 2800 in rating. Of the 10, only Kasparov is not active.

Of course, the real question to me is who will be the 2 who earn their Candidates spots via rating. I suppose Grischuk is now a slight favourite for one of those two spots but there's only 0.6 points separating Caruana, Giri, and Nakamura. Caruana is clearly heading in the wrong direction but that can change at any moment. Unless it doesn't ):

In my opinion, decimals and daily updates are a little ridiculous when it comes to ratings.

At least for today, Nakamura was a mere 2800 sojourner. I wouldn't be as harsh as Cycklops however (:

Cycklops: Caissa just realized that Nakamura crossed over into territory he didn't belong...and now...like Icarus...he will tumble back to the 2760 earth.

I think a good argument can be made that Ratings should only be published to the nearest ten points. A player 10 rating points better than another has only a 51% winning expectancy. Surely that's well within the margins of error.

False precision is a well known erroneous use of statistics. And, it is said, 95.4952 percent of statistics are made up on the spot!
