I can't answer your question, Dave, but IM Renier Castellanos (2479), playing on board 18, definitely has a strong Canadian connection, having lived in Montreal for a number of years a few years back and competing in many premier Quebec tournaments, as well as 2 Calgary Internationals, before returning to Spain. Renier has his 3 GM norms and had his rating over 2500 but never was awarded the GM title for some reason ):
