There's a 7 hour time difference between Sochi and Toronto, Vlad, so the games commence at 8 a.m. Toronto time.

Sochi is 7 hours ahead of T.O, 10 hours ahead of Vancouver, so ... 3 p.m. Sochi local time is 8 am Toronto, 5 am Vancouver.

supplemental: Grandmasters Evgeny Miroshnichenko and Dorian Rogozenco will provide live games commentary for the 1st round.

      Live video is here.

There's a very impressive virtual art gallery showing works by Russian artists on the subject of the Second World War as part of the Championship event. This year marks the 70th anniversary of that historic victory and, frankly, celebration is rather timely given the events honouring the Waffen SS in the Baltics, refusal by Canada, the US and Ukraine to reject Nazi propaganda in a UN vote, too many countries looking the other way at extremist elements in the Ukrainian regime, etc., etc. The story is here. No doubt the whole art gallery will make certain political elements apoplectic with rage and want to reach for their sidearm when they hear the word "culture". Too bad.

Or NOT ....... it seems CB has the colours wrong. According to the official site, Yuanling is White and the game is well under way.

Grischuk's wife, GM Natalia Zhukova (2471), took a quick 12-move draw with Black, courtesy of a well known Queen and piece sac for a perpetual, against fellow Ukrainian, IM Inna Gaponenko (2384).

I'm tempted to call that the Kosintseva draw since the Kosintseva sisters, Tatiana (2483) and Nadezhda (2489), have played that same short draw on many an occasion.

The 1st full point of the day goes to Alexandra Kosteniuk and her crushing '150 Attack' (:

Definitely the biggest upset of the day (:

The top 7 seeds did not give up a single half point. Yuanling just needs a draw tomorrow to advance to the 2nd round on Thursday. The full pairings tree can be found at the following Wikipedia link.

A great game and a nice finish.

What is your 2015 WWCC number? :) I played with 4 participants, and a result 3/4.
