  • CFC activity update

two years ago I published an update to CFC activity in this thread: http://www.chesstalk.info/forum/show...activity-redux

It's been two years, time for another update. Graphs for each province and Canada overall are at: http://www.victoriachess.com/cfc/graphs/_update2015.htm

    Things to remember:
-These are graphs of those rated >1200 who played at least once in the year previous in the region in question.
    - For each region, this still includes out of province (or country) players who happened to play there so subtract out the effect of large events (CYCC, Can Open) in the smaller provinces.

    Some conclusions:
-The Canada graph is up sharply but sadly this is not the result of increased activity - it is the effect of the CFC-FQE agreement.
    - by province, it is a mixed bag. Looks like things might have stabilized overall

    summary
    NB, NS up
    AB, BC stable
MB, PEI, NL keeping the downward trend
    ON - not sure
    and SK is still dead.

    Re: CFC activity update

It seems that there has been a bit of an uptick in the last two years in the numbers for Canada, Ontario and Quebec. It seems to me that there are more opportunities to play than ever. We have also seen a number of adult players increase where parents start playing because of their kids. Windsor had no adult chess scene but it seems to be coming back from the dead in part due to children's chess. We had five hundred people show up for a fundraiser for CYCC. I'm not sure about the funds raised but it certainly resulted in raised awareness of CYCC.
