  • Lykke-Merlot Helliesen

Six-year-old Lykke-Merlot Helliesen from Norway thinks she's already better than Carlsen was at her age. GM Simen Aggestein, whom she beat in a simul, would seem to endorse her bravado (:

I would have tried Bh1 at some point, then cheapo the 6 year-old girl with d4+
      Haha, I'm so evil

Wait 20 years for her to become the world champion, then post the video on youtube :-P

        Lykke-Merlot Helliesen

There is nothing I like more than a good chess story and a six-year old girl beating a grandmaster is a very good story.

You can see the video clip at:

        https://youtu.be/X1JxSxiPykA

Lykke is the girl with the head-band.

I have been unable to find the score of this remarkable game. To be quite honest the atmosphere is more like a birthday party for six-year-olds than a serious simul.

I assume that other posters on this thread can analyze the game from the clip with that music blaring. I cannot. Is my venerable leg being pulled?

        A quote from The Local:

        http://www.thelocal.no/20150511/vide...-chess-prodigy

“Lykke-Merlot has been playing chess for six months at a local chess club in her hometown of Sandefjord. During that time, she has made remarkable progress, beating many of the best 12-13 year-olds.

According to her mother, May-Brit Park Helliesen, Lykke-Merlot showed signs of intelligence very early in life, tying her father’s ties when she was just three years old.

”She could tie five different tie knots when she was three or four years old. Including a double-double windsor,” Helliesen told Aftenposten.”

I have respect for Lykke. I wasn’t able to tie a Windsor Knot until I was a teenager and I have never won in a simul!

Morten Sundby, deputy chairman of the Caissa Chess Club in Sandefjord where Lykke-Merlot plays, has a couple of apposite comments (from chess24.com):

When she began to attend the Caissa Chess Club in Sandefjord she soon impressed, with Morten Sundby, deputy chairman of the club’s youth department, commenting:

She has many qualities. First, there’s something about her eyes. When someone’s giving checkmate their eyes often wander as they’re unsure if it’s correct or not. But she’s cocksure and just sits there without checking whether it’s really mate.

He thinks she now plays like the best 12-13 year old boys in the club, and comments:

The first time she came she had a fiercely competitive instinct. It was quite new to her and she lost games, but she fought like a lioness. She hit the chess clock so violently that the boys were frightened.

Wow! I love it! Definitely she sounds like a gamer. Lets smack those boys around on the chessboard.
