  • National Open in Las Vegas June 19-21 - but with changes...

The annual National Open will be held in Las Vegas June 19-21 - one of the best-run tournaments I have ever played in. All 400-500 tables in one room; sets, boards, and some clocks supplied; rounds starting on time; a GM to analyze your games at no charge; etc.

But this year there will be a difference - it will not be at the Riviera, which has been sold to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, which plans to demolish it and expand its convention centre (not the much bigger CC, which is a block or two away). With the exception of a couple of years, the tournament has been held there for at least the last 25 years. The auction of the furnishings, etc. starts today.

This year, it's being held just out the back door of the Riviera - at the former Las Vegas Hilton - now called the Westgate. (it was known as the "Whyte House" in "Diamonds are Forever" (James Bond)).

    Maybe I'll be there.

But Hugh... according to the guaranteed prize structure, the 2nd place finisher in the Open gets less than the winner of the U1600! How could you support such a tournament? ;)

Westgate is where they held the National Bridge Tournament last July. They usually offer good prices and you can take the monorail to get to the main strip. The Westgate has improved the hotel slightly, but they are trying to convert to some time share units

That's the secret of attracting class/ lower section players to join and use their entry fees to allocate the guaranteed prize structure. At least the organizers are trying to lure section/class chess players to join worthy of their entry fees.
