    Elo Rating Soccer

    June 5, 2015

The New Yorker has an article on the accuracy of the Elo system for rating soccer, using the Barcelona (rated 2108) vs Juventus (rated 1945) final as an example.

    Part of the conclusion is:

Elo ratings have also become more accurate predictors of the final, according to the rising correlation in the graph above. This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, either. Teams in the Champions League now play more matches than ever, not just against their opponents in continental competitions but also in domestic leagues and cups. Each of these matches offers fodder for Elo — a chance to refine the ratings using the chains of results attached to both teams.

For the record, Barcelona beat Juventus 3-1 in the Champions League Final.

According to my calculations, due to the great difference in their Elo ratings, Magnus Carlsen ought to beat Barcelona handily in a 24-game match.
