Jeff Sarwer is leading the 10-player ShakkiNet GM tournament in Helsinki with 4 1/2 points from six games, half a point ahead of Russian GM Vasily Emelin and Finnish IM Daniel Ebeling. Three rounds remain to be played. The GM norm is 7 points while the IM norm is 5 points.

Here is Jeff's R4 crush of IM Daniel Ebeling (2460) on the Black side of a Caro-Kann.

Re: Jeff Sarwer
Jeff is playing the tournament's defending champion, Russian GM Vasily Yemelin in the penultimate round and needs a draw to stay a 1/2 point ahead of Yemelin. A draw would also secure his IM norm while a win would keep alive the possibility of a GM norm.

Re: Jeff Sarwer
Just wanted to note how well Jeff is playing. He entered the tournament with 2250 Fide. Hes gained a bundle of Fide points putting him well over 2300 and has a win against a GM and two IMs and maybe even more importantly has not lost a game so far!! Jeff seems very serious on his quest for the GM title and I wish him all the best. Very exciting!

This sounds exactly like what a woman player did just a few weeks ago (Mihaela Sandu in European Women's CC) and in her case she had to play the last part of the tournament practically under accusation of cheating.Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.

Re: Jeff Sarwer
Jeff is playing with Finnish chess federation affiliation, it seems, from chessdom.com.
Very interesting news about his chess! I occasionally get questioned, by mostly non-chess people, about him, but hadn't realized he had returned to the competitive arena!
Wishing him all the best; there is still one round to go.
Jeff was once a Kingston resident, under rather controversial circumstances.

Re: Jeff Sarwer
Jeff went down fighting with an admirable performance. Openings were not his problem against GM strength opposition (unusual to say the least) but he needs some work on tactics (do more puzzles Jeff!). Congratulations on a great performance!

Re: Jeff Sarwer
On the tournament blog a person wrote that a TA told Jeff Sarwer about the norm after his loss in R8.
"As the players shook hands and Jeff congratulated his opponent on a game well played, our Chief Arbiter Jouni Lehtivaara had a surprise in store, approaching to congratulate Jeff on achieving an IM norm despite this loss. It turns out that 5 points out of nine is enough after all!"
