  • CanBase updates coming soon!

CanBase - the database of games played by Canadian players - will be updated in the next couple of weeks. It will feature at least 25 "new" games from Canadian championships of the 1870's.

If you have any games you wish to have included, please send them to me... hugh dot brodie at mcgill dot ca.

    Re: CanBase updates coming soon!

A typical game from the 1877 Canadian Championship (Quebec City). Both players finished near the middle of the 11-player round-robin. It shows that there was a lack of literature (and opponents) about the game in those days - it was difficult to improve. Many games from these events have early h3 and h6 moves, as well as N's being placed on h2 and h7. If you knew chess at all, you were probably welcome to such an event. A higher quality of Canadian chess wouldn't come for another 10-15 years.
