  • Toronto Chess Club....in 1878

From the Toronto "Globe", October 26, 1878:

"On Friday, November 1, this club holds its annual meeting for the election of officebearers. We hope that a more successful season lies before us than the last one proved to be, and there is certainly every reason why the Club should not flourish exceedingly. No better - if indeed as good - accommodation is offered to the membership of any club in the country. Every weekday and evening, the tables stand ready for play, and visitors can nearly always find an opponent. The place of play is the Games Room of the Mechanics' Institute, with a private room once a week for Club meetings. The membership fee is $3 per annum, and members wishing use of the Institute library and reading-room can have it for a further $1 per annum.

Let us make the Toronto Chess Club what it ought to be - the leading club in the Dominion - and as a short step see that there is a good meeting on the 1st."
