    Vassily Ivanchuk - Checkerist

    July 11, 2015

Ivanchuk is playing in the Open Dutch Championship for international checkers/draughts.

The so-called Heerhugowaard Open takes place from July 11 to July 18 incl. The Open Tournament will be played according to the Swiss system (with rating) in which the same opponent is never met more than once.

The Fischer system will be applied: one hour and twenty minutes plus one minute per move. Extension of thinking time and arbitration are not allowed.

For the Open Tournament: A victory gives 2 points and a draw 1 point. After 6 rounds, the best 8 players of the ranking will be selected. For round 7 these 8 will play against each other in a knock-out system to qualify for the 2016 Masters Group.

And Vassily is on the list of participants

The board is 10x10 and each side has 20 men. The general rule is that all moves and captures are made diagonally. All references to squares refer to the dark squares only. The main differences from English draughts are: the size of the board (10×10), pieces can also capture backward (not only forward), the long-range moving and capturing capability of kings, and the requirement that the maximum number of men be captured whenever a player has capturing options.

The game also is known as Polish draughts

There is an absolutely delightful photo of Ivanchuk posing in front of a demonstration board at

Quite honestly, I am out of my depth here. If any one follows this type of competition, I would be interested to hear how Ivanchuk rates against the world’s best.

Here's the ratings page from the world draughts federation (10x10 draughts is classed on the website as a variant, with no seperate rating system used that I am yet aware of):

At least for regular (8x8) draughts, I could not find Ivanchuk in the world's top 100 when I looked, if he also plays regular draughts.

In Edmonton Vassily told me that this will be his next tournament and he will actually try to prepare for it pretty seriously for about 9 days after the conclusion of the Edmonton International.

Vassily told me that this will be his first ever tournament, so I am not exactly sure why there is a rating shown for him on the official tournament website.
