  • Montreal open championship

The Ahuntsic chess club is pleased to invite all chess players to the forthcoming Montreal Open Championship, September 11-13 and first tournament of the 2015-2016 Tour du Québec Oasis.

We are happy to announce the participation of GM Alexandre Le Siège (ELO 2528). After a few years of absence from the chess scene, Alexandre made a remarkable come back in the 3èmes rencontres internationales de la francophonie in Montreal last month, finishing tied in fifth place with a score of 6½/9. A few weeks earlier he had won a semi-rapid match against GM Bareev (1½-½).

The tournament benefits from the sponsorship of Goddesschess, an American group that promotes women's chess. For good measure, ladies have taken notice : current Canadian Women's Champion Natalia Khoudgarian (WIM, ELO 2118) will participate. Algeria's Sabrina Latreche, another WIM (ELO 2059) and arabian champion has announced her intention to be present - if she can obtain her visa in time...

Total guaranteed prizes initially added up to 6 000 $ including 250 $ in women's prizes. However, Goddesschess has just decided to double this ! Therefore, the women's prizes will be 500 $ for a revised prize fund of 6 250 $. Please note on the website the new distribution of the women's prizes, as well as the tiebreaks applied to them - both of which supersede any previously issued documents, including the magazine Échec+ #221.

To consult the list of pre-registered players, go to Championnat ouvert de Montréal, click the Registration tab and next the "List of pre-registered players" link.

The organisers should make the lower sections CFC rated.

Note that the "Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal" will take place Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 12 and 13) near the College. Saturday - only Park Ave. will be closed - but Sunday, many others will be closed, including parts of Cote Ste-Catherine, Edouard-Montpetit, Cote-des-Neiges, etc.

Thanks Hugh for drawing our attention on the Grand Prix Cycliste. One must anticipate a longer transit time to get the playing hall by car because of that. We will remind the participants during the tournament.

To-day entries have been coming in left, right and center - this is very encouraging. We are up to 130 people now, with 10 days remaining in the last stretch. To-morrow morning we will handle new entries between now and midnight.

Pre-registered people, please check the information we have about you. If you see mistakes, please e-mail us info@echecsahuntsic.com.
