    Carlsen’s Proposal

    From chessnews.ru:

Alexei Shirov: "I have great respect for Magnus because he asserts his own ideas"

    Wednesday, 19.08.2015

Grandmaster Alexei Shirov expresses his opinion on Magnus Carlsen's recent statement:

"As a matter of fact, I'm not sure I like Carlsen's proposal", Shirov wrote in his comment on Chess-News. "I find a double round-robin like San Luis or Mexico more appropriate than a large knockout. But I have great respect for Magnus at least because he asserts his own ideas in spite of his current environment".

Let us remind you that Shirov was close to becoming the world champion two times, according to different systems. In 1998, he defeated Vladimir Kramnik in the semifinal match, but the final match vs Kasparov has never taken place. In 2000, he advanced to the final stage of the knockout championship in New Delhi, where he lost to Anand 0.5-3.5.
