According to EP #73 (June 1985), there was a playoff to determine who would represent Canada in Dubai at the World Junior. Puri won - but some details are not clear.

    1) The first two games of the playoff were played in a city not mentioned in the article (Toronto?). Vinny won the first; Tyler won the second. Are either of these gamescores available? Dates? Location?

    2) The "second half" took place in Windsor - Vinny won game 3 (game score in the article).

    3) Was there a game 4 - or was it sudden-death after game 2? Dates?

    4) What is the correct spelling of Puri's first name? Vinny? Vinnay? Vinay? (he played in the recent PWC Toronto Open)

Some of my questions have been answered by taking a closer look at EP #73.

    1) The first two games were played in Toronto, and the gamescores are published in EP #73. They will be in my next CanBase update.

    2) Game 3 ended the match.

    3) No dates (except "March 1985") are mentioned.

Sorry - another correction. Game 1 of the playoff was NOT published in EP #73 - only games 2 and 3. Does anyone have game 1?

        Re: 1984-85 Canadian Junior

Hugh, according to Chessbase Megabase 2009, Puri's first name is "Vinny".
I confirmed this spelling by going to Jonathan Berry's website, and discovered that this is how Jonathan has spelled Puri's first name also. See: http://members.shaw.ca/berry5868/jun.htm

Unfortunately Chessbase Megabase 2009 has no games from this event :(

That is all the information I have on this event,
        sincerely,
