  • John M Burke

John M (Michael) Burke has broken Wei Yi's record as the youngest ever 2600 player as reported by ChessBase.

John was rated just 2258 in June and seemingly has absolutely no FIDE titles as yet. His meteoric rise due to the k=40 factor is detailed at BusinessStandard.

I'll also note that John plays at chess.com and has a 2771 rating there. Definitely out of my stratosphere ):

St. Louis Public Radio recently highlighted the young (seemingly now 14, not 13) Mr. Burke.

John M Burke is one of 9 Americans on 'Chess By The Numbers' "Current Prodigy Watchlist", by far the largest representation from any one country.

        From Facebook

(Sam Shankland, US GM approx. 2650) "In all seriousness, this K=40 business is a real problem. There are no winners at all when stuff like this happens, and the ones it hurts the most are the players it affects directly. I'm sure this John Burke is a talented young man who of course did absolutely nothing wrong, he just came to his games and played chess, and now he is the butt of jokes from jerks like me all over social media. He's going to have to deal with added pressure and massive rating losses in all of his upcoming tournaments, and I know far too well the kind of effect this can have on a young player.

Regardless of whether K=40 sticks around or not, calculating a live rating at the end of each tournament and using them for upcoming events would help a lot as well. If that had been used in this case, he would be ~2400 right now, which is not a bad estimation of his actual strength based on recent results. And on top of that, his opponents would have saved some rating points, which also seems fair because while 2600 is insane, he was obviously very underrated at 2250."
