  • 2009 Ontario Open: last week registrations

Hi chess friends, this posting includes a lot of useful information, so unless you have already paid, please consider reading it through. Even with the many registrations expected this week, the goal is to start our first round right on time! You can find the list of over 40 players who are already registered near the end of this posting. Note that the majority of players already registered are travelling to Ottawa. This is because in Ottawa tournaments at the RA Centre, most of the local players register on the Thursday evening before the event. Therefore, I would expect us to have a few more dozen players by Saturday. I plan to re-post the list of registered players on Tuesday, Thursday, and finally Friday evening. I will be offline as of 8am Saturday morning.

Unless you mail in your payment by cheque this weekend, you might want to consider paying in cash during one of the following onsite registrations. Regardless of when you prefer to register and pay, please feel free to email me your intent, as that will save everyone precious time onsite, thanks!

Tuesday evening, recommended for local players
    - the EOCA AGM will be at the RA Centre, Bytowne Room, from 730pm to 9pm (estimated)
    - I will be taking registrations at 7pm, and then after the meeting has adjourned

Thursday evening, recommended for RA players
    - I expect to be at the RA from at least 7pm to 930pm

Friday evening, recommended rather than Saturday! ;)
    - I expect to be in the playing rooms from 530pm onwards

Saturday morning, this should be your last choice! ;)
    - I will be in the playing rooms from 1130am to 12noon
    - Swiss pairings are planned to be done right at 12noon
    - players paying after will be added to pairings as feasible
    - by the way, please renew CFC memberships ahead of time (and ask the CFC office to copy me on the email receipt)

    --------- original event announcement ---------

The Eastern Ontario Chess Association (EOCA) is proud to be hosting the 2009 Ontario Open, to be held on the traditional Victoria Day long weekend.

This event will be 6 rounds, with flexible bye and Amateur options. Our schedule also features starting and ending round times to encourage travelling to and from Ottawa. In addition, lodging options include nearby Carleton University residences, with much lower room rates, and breakfast buffet included!

We will have multiple sections, and class prizes for every 200 rating points from 2200 to 1400. Every player will be submitted for both CFC and FIDE rating.

For complete details for this event, and a great webpage for all of the events in the 2008-2009 EOCA Grand Prix & Active Series, bookmark this weblink:

    --------- some final points ---------

Note that Wei Xiong is a floater player for the event. Floater players will play between 0 and 6 rounds, whenever the number of players for their section is odd. They will play for free, and have all their games rated, but in exchange, they will receive relatively late notice on whether they are playing in the next round. Good candidates for floater players are people who normally hang around anyway to watch a relative or friend play. I am asking, for all of the 6 rounds, a floater player for every 200 rating points. If you would be interested, please ensure that your CFC membership is current, and apply by email.

Finally, I would like to thank Chris Mallon, Bill Doubleday, and Eric Van Dusen, who have graciously offered to help set up the playing and skittles rooms.

FYI, the skittles (postgame analysis) room will be the Laurentian Room, which is in the the other (West) wing of the RA Centre, and up on the 2nd floor.

      Hi Aris;
How many of those players are amateurs you did not indicate who is playing for rating and who are playing for Prizes. Are you planning to combine by rating
Two groups to make enough players to run a swiss or are you planning a Round Robin in each section if your numbers stay this low?
Hopefully numbers will grow by Thursday Night.

Hi John, all players are arranged into sections by their rating. If an Amateur wins a section, for example, then the prize goes to the next (non-Amateur) player. When you come onsite, you'll see that the wall charts flag the Amateur players, so that players playing for money can plan how they approach their games (playing for win or draw, etc.) Having said that, I tend to have bigger but fewer prizes, which tends to reward aggressive play and high scores. As of this evening, I am predicting 3 or 4 sections.

However, the wild card is registration on Thursday. It's just a tradition in Ottawa that local players register at the RA chess club on the Thursday evening before the event. There have been times in the past when over 40 players have registered on a Thursday evening, and over 20 right before the first round. It used to drive me crazy, but I guess over the years I have become strangely used to it, LOL. Therefore, please check back here on ChessTalk late Thursday evening or early Friday morning, when I plan to post a much more realistic players list, including probable sections, prize funding so far, etc.

P.S. I have contract work out of town Thursday, so I will arrive at the RA chess club later than previously indicated. I'll confirm my expected times in a new post later tonight.
