Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

On the heels of the record flooding in South Carolina and the unheard of mudslides in Los Angeles....
I saw a Public Television show tonight profiling the port in Jacksonville FL. Apparently this port is a bit inland, along a river, and in order to expand it and make it more competitive, the river needs to be dredged, and that involves environmental hearings.
A woman was interviewed and she was on the team of people that is applying to the Federal government for the dredging to be allowed. She came on and said in so many words: "Yes, we have to consider the environment, but when it comes to a choice between saving a wetland environment and creating jobs for people, we must ALWAYS choose creating jobs for people." Seriously, these were almost her exact words.
And in the recent Republican debates, Marco Rubio practically denied climate change altogether and pretty much said that he will ALWAYS choose jobs for Americans over environmental protections. Almost the exact same words as the woman on PBS.
I only bring this all up to show that even when evidence of the EFFECTS of climate change are overwhelming us with their images and stories, there are people in power who are going to simply say it's more important to grow the economy. Economic growth and jobs are the here and now, and these people simply won't let climate change and its effects slow anything down.
We are in a stagnant global economy. China is slowing down dramatically, affecting everybody else around the world. Demand is not growing. Desperate governments are going to do desperate things to try and jump-start new growth, and that means damn the environment. It truly is a stark choice facing the entire world: either keep the economic machine humming and allow the environment, specifically climate change, to destroy us within a decade or two, or cut back the economy dramatically to reduce climate change, thereby saddling the entire world with economic hardship and possibly a global depression.
I don't believe pragmatic governments, no matter their political ideology, are going to let climate change derail economic growth. Therefore the choice is forced upon us, and we should all prepare for the worst of the climate change effects. It is absolutely useless at this point trying to change minds as Paul Beckwith was trying to do here. Citizenry is NOT going to have any say in the matter. Prepare for yourself, and help others prepare for themselves.

Meanwhile having a job to put food on the table is immediate and direct. And the majority of people are unable to follow the maxim of sacrificing now for greater benefit later. For the same reason people buy big screen TVs instead of saving for retirement, or eat fast food and not exercise. Everyone knows it's bad for you, but they do it anyway.
I'm not saying it's right. I'm just saying that citizenry, to borrow your term, is largely too self-centered to care about climate change. They certainly aren't willing to sacrifice their lively-hood for it.

Actually, there is a vast array of changes we can make to improve the situation with very little or no pain whatsoever. It's a matter of recognizing the problem and deciding to do something about it. I am not saying "problem solved", down the road there will be some sacrifices and difficult choices to make, but we can start solving the problem today.
Go out and vote, but not for the conservatives!
Gentleman, thank you for your care. Climate change is real, and serious. I am not Canadian, but respect your country and people. I am helping Paul. If there is anything I can do for you, but does not include a simul by Yasser Seirawan, let me know! :). I joined here, just to follow up, if but for a moment amidst other, pressing work...
He has tireless worked and spoken and his new website is a serious effort. There are many smart persons in science and some of course in real chess, but Paul is one smart guy, with such a wide view. He is great to work with, and we built his site and more is to come. He has a book in the works, tt Naomi Klein recently, probably is helping if not taking senior role with a European start up... and has new videos coming. Your mention is such a delight. And let Paul know.
The planet is in very serious trouble, and its nice to see climate believers in chess. As for me, well, I do not have imprimatur there, as the stress is way too much for me, but certainly know and follow the game. Yasser is a close friend, and he even asked me to give HIM all his games with the WCC in chessbase, for his book Duals. Asked him: 'Did I miss any?' 'Nope. You got em all!' That's Tal, Smyslov, Kasparov, etc... Yasser certainly views as Paul, and you both do. http://paulbeckwith.net/chess/.

The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference is scheduled to begin soon in Paris, France.
Prime Minister Trudeau has promised action on climate change. I wonder if he will signal to the world that Canada is really serious by inviting Elizabeth May to join the Canadian delegation. :)
