Hopefully Kevin Spraggett will produce another gem like his chessgames.com 'game of the day' today, "Basanta Claws" (:

On the English Chess Forum this game is being discussed between Bellon and Kristinsson:

          Round 1, Jan. 26, 2016
Bellon Lopez, Juan – Kristinsson, Magnus
          C14 French, Classical, Tarrasch Variation

          1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 e6 3.e4 Be7 4.Bd3 d5 5.e5 Nfd7 6.Bxe7 Qxe7 7.Nc3 O-O 8.Nh3 a6 9.Bxh7+ 1-0

(Roger de Coverly) - White's eighth move sets a rare trap. I could only find two examples, one from 1893 and the other from a more recent junior tournament. In both cases, Black was alert enough to spot the problem, playing 8. .. f6 in 1893 and 8. .. h6 more recently. Perhaps because of the transposition from the Tromp, he wasn't as aware of the threats to h7 as a regular French player may have been.

          Masters Ranking After Round One

Anand failed to extract a full point in round one. It has been a long time since he has played in an open tournament with the fierce pressure to win the early rounds.

Maybe he wants the full experience and is trying out the 'swiss gambit'. :)

Congrats To Victor and Leon for achieving draws against much higher rated opposition. Oddly enough they now trade opponents with each other for round 2. Perhaps they should trade notes :) Go break a pawn Canadians.

The Aryan Tari - MVL game is off to an unconventional start with Aryan putting both his Knights on the rim with 6.Na4 and 7.Nh4 and MVL leaving his Knight hanging on d5. (:

                      Round Three

In Round 2, the top seeds had a fairly easy time of it. Nakamura and MVL had smooth wins. Vishy Anand, who had drawn in the first round against Szidonia Lazarne Vajda beat Matthias Bach.

Two upset wins were Natalia Pogonina against Arkadij Naiditsch and Erik Blomqvist against Li Chao.

In Round Three, Hikaru Nakamura came up against the Russian Grigoriy Oparin. He is 19 years old, being made grandmaster when 16. He held Hikaru to a draw.

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave met Aryan Tari, the Norwegian boy who scored his first grandmaster norm at 13. His parents came from Iran and he is picked to be the successor to Magnus Carlsen. MVL beat him in 37 moves.

And three interesting wins/losses – Anand beat Xu Xiangyu, Anna Muzychuk won against Laurent Fressinet and Nigel Short lost to Dronavalli Harika.

Nigel took the loss with good grace. There were others who thought it showed that Nigel’s views about women chess players were wrong:

(Nigel Short) – Not ill, nor tired, just totally outplayed by Harika

(Susan Polgar)- Harika just won with black vs an opponent rated 173 pts higher. Her brain must be wired differently.

On the English Chess Forum, someone noted that one of the players in the Open is named Gilles Suez-Panama.

Another replied: Gilles is from the French Caribbean. I’ve played him a couple of times and until today it had not occurred to me that there was anything unusual about his name.

Gilles, b. 1973, is the Chess Champion of Martinique.

Indeed, it resembles one of those alphabet problems that Pal Benko often composes.

                          Re: Tradewise Gibraltar 2016

Three of the eleven perfect 3/3 scores belong to women, Harika, Goryachkina, and Anna Muzychuk (sister Mariya has 2.5), who will find themselves on boards 3, 4, and 5 respectively tomorrow. Then again, they are the #10, 12, and 6 female players on the planet. And Goryachkina is still 8 months away from her 18th birthday so is presumably only going to get a whole lot better. (:

                            January 29, 2106

The number and quality of the women competitors present may have something to do with the size of the Women's Awards:

                            1st Prize £15,000 2nd Prize £10,000 3rd Prize £5,000 4th Prize £3,500 5th Prize £2,500

At the present rate of exchange, first is worth $30,200
