  • Does the Chess Bishop using Medieval Helmet instead of a Miter?

    Hi to everybody!.

I have seen 3 times in 3 different books, some Chess Diagrams where the piece: "Bishop" is represented using a helmet with visor, ie, a helmet medieval knight armor instead of representing it, as is more common, with a Miter Papal, you know, right?.

My question is: What is specific reason for that in these diagrams chess the piece: Bishop is represented in this way? Why?.

I read that the Catholic Church, had in its moment, some influence on this board game such as changing the old names of pieces to current names. Now, I don't know if the influence of Catholic Church also had something to do with it of represent the bishop piece with a helmet.

I'll be waiting for your answers about it.

    Thank you very much!.

Good question. Check out my Elephant/Bishop post for a partial answer to your question. You got me thinking that the changes that occurred to the game of chess in medieval times might have been occasioned first by the church and then by the royalty.
