  • 2009 Ontario Open: please bring your sets and clocks

VERY IMPORTANT LAST-MINUTE NEWS: The OCA executive is advising me that they are having trouble retrieving their sets and clocks from the previous borrowers, last weekend. So, please bring your sets and clocks! I cannot emphasize this enough, as I can personally populate only the top 4 boards! ;)

Please find the list of almost 65 players who are already registered near the end of this posting. Even with more than a few players registered as Amateur, the prize fund is already approaching $4K, and which will grow faster now, as all fixed expenses have been covered. I plan to re-post this list of registered players by late Friday evening. Please note that I will be offline as of 8am Saturday morning, and then I will be onsite late Saturday morning, by 1130am.

Regardless of when you prefer to register and pay, please feel free to email me your intent, as that will save everyone precious time onsite. In addition, please note that no discounts are available onsite for players who do not register ahead of time by email, and arrive on Saturday to both register and pay.

Friday evening, recommended rather than Saturday! ;)
    - I expect to be in the playing rooms from 530pm onwards

Saturday morning, this should be your last choice! ;)
    - I will be in the playing rooms from 1130am to 12noon
    - Swiss pairings are planned to be done right at 12noon
    - players paying after will be added to pairings as feasible
    - by the way, please renew CFC memberships ahead of time (and ask the CFC office to copy me on the email receipt)

    --------- original event announcement ---------

The Eastern Ontario Chess Association (EOCA) is proud to be hosting the 2009 Ontario Open, to be held on the traditional Victoria Day long weekend.

This event will be 6 rounds, with flexible bye and Amateur options. Our schedule also features starting and ending round times to encourage travelling to and from Ottawa. In addition, lodging options include nearby Carleton University residences, with much lower room rates, and breakfast buffet included!

We will have multiple sections, and class prizes for every 200 rating points from 2200 to 1400. Every player will be submitted for both CFC and FIDE rating.

For complete details for this event, and a great webpage for all of the events in the 2008-2009 EOCA Grand Prix & Active Series, bookmark this weblink:

My thanks to Chris Mallon, Bill Doubleday, Frank Dixon, and Eric Van Dusen, who have graciously offered their help in the playing and skittles rooms.

FYI, the skittles (postgame analysis) room will be the Laurentian Room, which is in the the other (West) wing of the RA Centre, and up on the 2nd floor.

Re: 2009 Ontario Open: please bring your sets and clocks

This is really quite outrageous. The OCA cannot supply the Ontario Open with the sets we have all paid for! There must be serious question about whether there is any value in continuing to be associated with such an incompetent (at best) outfit. Perhaps Northern Ontario had the right idea in affiliating directly with the CFC. At least the CFC shows some signs of getting its act together.

... perhaps instead of making stuff up, you could have merely asked what exactly the problem was.

....perhaps instead of the attitude, you could have explained what the problem was. From an earlier post, you said the equipment had been lent out and not yet returned? To whom, and did you get a deposit from them?

please explain your reference to "making stuff up".?? Gordon is quite correct to question the legitimacy of the OCA when it can't deliver on a simple promise. I hope your apology to Aris was sincere.

Please announce again the annual meeting for the OCA. I have noted in my calendar, May 23rd in Kitchener. But exactly where and when please, and why it is not posted on the OCA website ?

In a different thread, I asked the time of the annual meeting, but received no reply. The location is Kitchener City Hall.

Re: 2009 Ontario Open: please bring your sets and clocks

We did finally get the sets and clocks back today, although we had to start talking about going to the police for that to happen, apparently.

We will have a formal rental policy for the equipment up for discussion at the AGM.

I'm not sure why the AGM announcement isn't on the OCA website, but I can't access it from up here in Ottawa (on my laptop) to change it. I'll do that tomorrow night.
