Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

Now, I'm not a member of the CFC Executive, but I think it would be great if you would consider bidding early for 2019. Your organization, and especially with Francis as your Chief Organizer, could most probably make any event a great success. I think one angle to shattering records is the early start!
I often get hired for youth events in the New York area, including some American turns with the NAYCC, and I would love to be able to bring to them any plans we might already have in place by then, for our next turn in 2019.
Anyway, just some thoughts to consider in your internal planning. Bien a vous.
Thank you for the congratulations. Bator and Deen would have been able to vote by email if eligible but since their terms ran Canadian Closed to Canadian Closed and we had a new 2015 champion (Tomas Krnan) and runner up (Eric Hansen) and a new Masters Rep (Victor Plotkin) they couldn't vote.
i approached them to support our bid because they were on the CFC website (Go to your site, click on about us, and then staff, officers and governors). i assumed (wrongly I guess) that the folks listed there were the ones who could vote. At the end of the day I am fine with the result and I wish you 3 successful events!
Thank you. My email to the Windsor parents will start out something like: there is good and bad news. The good news is that we won all the bids. The bad news is that we won all the bids.
The website information was accurate in July. At some point soon we will have to redo it again (the entire website, I mean, without spending $18k) though probably not this year or next if we get caught up in the online Premium Chess Server. The problem is there are too few volunteers/employees/administrators with free time to make sure everything is accurate and up to date. I could do it but I find dealing with the website very frustrating and so only have done so lately when you needed to change the Strategy and Games feature item and even that sometimes yields strange results like the update works on one web browser and not another at least temporarily.
From a sanity point of view I would have been okay with losing all bids as they would have been in good hands but when you have sponsorship involved you have to follow through.

Aurora CC thanx for shifting the CYCC by one day to Tuesday compared to the last year Monday.
2016 Aurora Summer Open will be held on July 2-3. Some players benefited a lot in previous years, even winning their categories at the CYCC; that I even created a slogan: Aurora Opens - where champions are honed :)

I really wanted to not step on anyone's toes. CYCC is after Aurora Summer Open and NAYCC is after Kitchener Chess Fest. Maybe we can create a summer grand prix Aurora----CYCC----Canadian Open----Quebec Open----Kitchener Chess Fest----NAYCC for a few. Our new working title for the Windsor tournaments is Caesars Windsor Summer of Chess. I just got approval from Caesars Windsor very quickly.
After our conversation this morning with Caesars Windsor convention manager I think we can revise upward the number of grandmasters we can invite. We have six slots now at this bare bones stage of the bid. With more aggressive fundraising we will hopefully be able to increase that.
Does anyone know what the greatest number of grandmasters in a Canadian tournament ever, was?

Truthfully Aurora had more to do with it than the World Open. By sidestepping the Aurora tournament we also sidestepped the World Open. I suspect there will be more Aurora players at CYCC than there will be from the World Open. Perhaps we can start a competition.
There were 22 GM's at Ottawa in 2007. As for overall strength, I think the 11 or 12 GM's at Winnipeg in 1997 would be tops. (but the number of GM's does not make a tournament as I have said before - spend the foreign GM money on strong Canadian players instead).

We are working on the details of reserved room blocks. We are probably looking at least 3 GMs at a minimum and maybe 6 at a maximum absent any additional sponsorship. There were some things in the Caesars proposal once explained seem to enhance their offer. Part of the problem with the Canadian Open is that there is such a range of possible attendance figures. If you reserve too few then everyone will have to scramble to find rooms at a busy time of year. Too many has problems as well as there can be penalties.

I strongly agree with Hugh's last point.
I would be much more interested in seeing Canadian legends (mostly IMs, even some famous FMs) vs. remote GMs. Thinking of people like Hergott, O'Donnell, Piasetski, etc.
