Magnus Carlsen This Year
December 30, 2015
I read the other day that Magnus had won six tournaments this year. I couldn’t remember them all and the number seemed high, so I set down the contests that he had participated in in 2015 and got this list:
1. Tata Steel, January, 1st, 13 games, 6+/6=/1-
2. Grenke Baden-Baden, February, 1st, 7 games, 3+/3=/1-
3. Gashimov Memorial Shamkir, April, 1st, 9 games, 5+/4=/0-
4. Norway Blitz, June, 3rd-4th, 9 games, 4+/3=/2-
5. Norway Chess, June, 7th-8th, 9 games, 2+/3=/4-
6. Sinquefield Cup, August, 2nd, 9 games, 3+/4=/2-
7. World Rapids Berlin, October, 1st, 15 games, 8+/7=/0-
8. World Blitz Berlin, October, 4th-6th, 21 games, 11+/6=/4-
9. European Team Champs Reykjavik, November, N/A, 7 games, 2+/2=/3-*
10. London Chess Classic, December, 1st, 9 games, 2+/7=/0-
11. Qatar Masters Open, December, 1st, 9 games, 5+/4=/0-
which indeed does give six 1st prizes and 117 games played, not counting playoffs. There were 5 games in the playoff with Naiditsch in Baden-Baden 2+/2=/1-, two games with MVL at London, 1+/1=/0- and two games with Yu Yangyi at Qatar, 2+/0=/0-.
That gives a grand total of 51+/50=/16- in regular games and 5+/3=/1- in playoffs. (corrected)
His worst tournament was Norway Chess, where he lost to Topalov, Caruana, Anand and Hammer.
Still, he played in 11 events, won more than half of them and maintained his rating above 2800. Not bad!
These figures are, of course, subject to correction.
*Note added later: This figure is incorrect, it should be 2+/3=/2-
He beat Wojtaszek and Leko, drew with Nispeanu, Papaioannou and Hansen and lost to Pelletier and Aronian.
