  • Canada 150 in 2017: International Border Match with USA!?

Next year, 2017, will be Canada's 150th anniversary as a nation.

What is Canadian chess planning to celebrate this momentous occasion?

In 1967, Canada's centennial, the Winnipeg Grandmaster tournament was staged, and GM D.A. Yanofsky published an excellent book "100 Years of Chess in Canada."

In 1976, to honour the bicentennial of the United States, an international mass chess match with Canada, on many dozens of boards, was arranged at border cities, and these took place at various times throughout that year.

So, my idea for 2017 would be to organize an international mass chess match with the U.S., along the same theme, to celebrate the longest undefended border in the world, along with the longstanding goodwill and mutually strong trading relationship.

If we can start planning and organizing now, we can make this a fantastic event with large participation and great media coverage, to build the image and projection of chess. :)
