  • One way to run a magazine...

I just got an email from New In Chess - a fine chess magazine that unfortunately, they don't exactly give away... It is devoted to top level chess and covers all the major tournaments etc.

One interesting thing the email contained was this quote that followed the observation that Jeremy Silman calls New In Chess "the best chess magazine of all time"... right after was this tongue-in-cheek:

Warning: New In Chess doesn't have any federation info,
scoring tables of sub-regional competitions, kid's puzzles,
address changes of local chairpersons, and the like.

This is quite interesting in comparison to some of the suggestions that abound for what to do with Chess Canada. Of course, N-I-C is a worlwide chess publication; a Canada-wide chess publication probably could not survive on its own in the marketplace without the CFC being the main supplier of subscribers.

ChessTalk 'is' the Canadian chess magazine:) All that needs to be added is facility to post chess diagrams and tournament x-tables. It will grow into what people want it to be! Unfortunetely it is unlikely the CFC will do anything to add to the existing tool. They will no doubt spend several times $10,000 to create something that will eventually evolve into something like I am describing. You can't stop evolution!:)

You do realize that Chesstalk (the old one and the new one) are part of Chess'n Math right? The CFC discussion forums - the one for non-governors and the exclusive one for governors - had minimal use as far as I can tell. The governor's discussion board was apparently hardly used at all; hell, until the recent upheaval due to Hal's proposal to revamp the CFC, 80% or more of the governors were largely silent.

After the AGM we will see if anything at all changes...

I think a discussion board like this one is fine for all sorts of things and should be part of the CFC but at the moment the CFC can barely run its own website.

Speaking of magazines, I guess we have to wait until GL9 is public to find out anything at all about the "May" issue (is that what the most recent ready-to-go-but-not-paid-for issue is? Perhaps even with GL9 we wont find out anything - maybe that too will be left to the AGM?

In no way shape or form was I suggesting the CFC should take over ChessTalk, seeing how they have the anti-Midas touch! I'm sure you recall that in the days of print we had the original Chess Canada which seemed to fulfill most peoples chess cravings once a month. In the five years of the magazine's existence, the CFC did not place a single ad, instead it supported the Chess Chat rag through free printing courtesy of J.G. Prentice.
What the CFC might do is include a link in its website to ChessTalk and to give some weight to various polls that appear on the site. In this way grass root ideas could evolve into CFC reality. A far-fetched dream, no doubt.

I agree with Vlad. I started playing Tournament Chess because of CHESS CANADA Magazine
with Peter Nurmi's Picture on it. I have only missed 2 Labour Day Opens in 35 years. I actually got my name in Chess Chat!!. I think those days Chess at the local level was more appeciated and recent Chess Canada Magazines never see the local small clubs as the back bone of the CFC. No wonder the CFC is failing.
Who wants to see the international blurt that can be seen on any of the websites. But what about the local clubs in Canada that keep the ball rolling.

I have already raised this issue. Now you do (and maybe you have done it before).

If many more Chesstalkers (*) were to join in this "battle", maybe somebody up there would listen and DO SOMETHING about it... if it's technically feasible.

(*) Especially some well known strong players like you.
