      Ivan Bukavshin

      August 31, 2016

There is a disturbing story in chess-news.ru about the death of Ivan Bukavshin. Condensing it:

The GM died on January 12, 2016, not of a stroke but due to acute poisoning of the drug No-spa.

His mother said that the Russian Chess Federation is not interested in what happened.

Apparently the death was at the Russian GM Centre “Scarlet Sails (?)”, where experienced GMs lecture to young chess players.

Some participants besides Bukavshin were Sanan Sjugirov, Dmitry Frolyanov, Jacob Geller, Alexander Predke and Igor Lysyj.

The last time Ivan was seen alive was on the night of the 11th of January. According to another participant in that session, Yakov Geller, the morning of the 11th of Bukavshin studied the theory, and after 22 hours in the lobby on the first floor of the building played table tennis with Sanan Sjugirov. About an hour of the night Van called mother - he was in a good mood, joking, no matter what did not complain, did not ask anything. Then the guys started to play a computer game on the mobile phone. Around two in the morning Geller went to his room, and Bukavshin with Sjugirov went to the kitchen to drink tea. It turns out that Sjugirov was the last person who saw Ivan alive.

His mother, E. Bukavshina: "Ivan was absolutely healthy. His stomach was completely empty, even without evidence of gastritis!.. His heart and other organs were completely healthy! Yes, I myself am a doctor and I know that a kid of twenty does not get a stroke.

My husband and I spent more time in investigation than the investigating authorities. We went to the "Scarlet Sails", talking to janitors, cleaners.. My son packed a standard first aid kit, in which there was no "No-spa". The resort has a dispensary, but there are no pharmacies, and there was no opportunity for him to buy this medicine. I printed his phone calls, gave people his computer to study whether he was looking at it for any information on "No-spa". Absolutely nothing was found. And in his room, no packaging for No-Spa was found although we examined it thoroughly.

Suicide is not valid theory. There is no direct evidence of suicide for he was happy in this period in his life. In 2015 he won the Russia Cup and was third in the Aeroflot Open and had a beautiful girl friend and was making plans..

Someone helped him die, but he had no enemies. We don’t know who would profit from his death.
From the Russian Chess Federation, just silence and indifference.

Chess-news.ru often publishes material critical of the Russian hard line (inflammatory Tweets from Silvio Danailov and Nigel Short for example!)

No-spa is a spasmolytic with myotropic action. No-spa decreases tonicity of smooth muscles. It is used for the treatment and prophylaxis of conditions and pain syndrome caused by spasms of the blood vessels. It is used to treat spasms of the smooth muscles of the digestive system: stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, enteritis.
