    Ancient Games Night
.....at the TIME CAPSULE CAFE, 2183 Danforth Ave
    Tuesday, January 26 - 7pm
Please join us to learn and play the three basic games - Chess, Backgammon and Go (Wei Chi)
Of the three ancient games, chess is the newest having first been played in India some 1500 years ago. Both backgammon and Go have been played for over 5,000 years.
Master of Ancient Games Vlad Dobrich will be on hand to introduce the basics of these three games to whoever has an interest in learning them.
A few of the playing boards will be provided however do bring a set if you have one to be sure to have it if needed.
Each attendee will be required to purchase a $5 food/drink ticket which can be used toward payment for food and/or drink from the bar/kitchen.
For more info on the venue, go to >>>>>http://www.timecapsulebgc.com/
There will definitely be chess players there but plenty of opportunities to try other games - Scrabble, Mah Jong, Monopoly, Catan and countless others.
Street parking is free on Danforth after 7pm and the Woodbine subway station is only a two minute walk.

Re: Chess and other games night

Seems we'll have a good turnout for the three ancient games - chess, Go and backgammon. Many chess players are asking if there might be a rapid tournament. Well the Café is providing four sets with clocks so we can have an eight player round-robin or a bigger swiss if players bring sets and clocks. If you plan to attend, please reply so to this post.
This will be an EVENT - so don't miss it!

RSVP's are starting to come in as the event is being promoted on a number of internet sites. Perhaps most notable is the Toronto Arts & Culture meetups which has forwarded the invitation to over 8,700 members !

...... still waiting for a response from the core chess players ? ? ?

For those not familiar with the game Go (Weiqi) please see this Wiki entry >>>>>>
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game)
And on Tuesday at the Time Capsule, come watch an exhibition game between two master players - 5Dan vs 6Dan.
The Dan rankings are comparable to the Dan rankings used in Judo and Karate. The highest level is 9Dan held by only a few Oriental professional players.

Re: Chess and other games night

So far 17 responses indicating probable attendance at the Ancient Games Night. But for the chess group, the response has been underwhelming. Still we have a core group of players to build on. Probable attendees list >>>>>>
            Brett Campbell
            Liza Orlova
            Erik Malmsten
            Peter McSherry
            Birbir (Viking Bakery)
            Mona d'Utopia
            Igor (Time Capsule)
            Dimitry Skrypal

Enough for a round-robin rapid tournament and with more players could be a swiss.
If we can get good support this will be a very good venue for chess as there is lots of room, good lighting and the two owners are avid chess players. Please come by to check the place out. It's right on the subway line and must be convenient to anyone who lives in the east end.
            RSVP Vlad

Re: Chess and other games night

The proprietors at TIME CAPSULE were quite pleased with the turnout for the Tuesday night turnout for the Ancient Games Night. But only four chess players showed up and Erik Malmsten ended up playing Peter McSherry for the duration.
Both the backgammon and Go were well attended and the event will be repeated on Tuesday evenings.
Apologies for the quality of the attached photo - I'll keep trying.
