Blast from the past! 1st Annual Grand Pacific Open 2007
This tournament was held at the luxury 5 star Grand Pacific Hotel in Victoria in association with the Victoria Chess Festival. The tournament, held over the Easter weekend, attracted 41 players including several from the State of Washington and one from Brazil.
Hanniegn Pitre, a Seattle player and frequent visitor to BC tournaments captured clear first place with a near perfect score of 4.5 and collected the $250 first prize.
Second through fourth place was shared between two Washington players, top rated Mike Mac Gregor and Mike Murray as well as local Victoria player Brian Esler.
The Under 2000 prizes were divided after a four way tie between Arie Milner, Evan Raymer, Elliot Raymer and Tanraj Sohal.
The Under 1600 prizes went in a three way tie between Foster Tom, Moise Herringer, Kristijan Gorgevik 3/5
The Under 1200 prizes also went in a three way tie between Alejandro Torrez-Lopez, Ivo Wright, Elliot Lupini 2/5
The excellent location, the synergy of events and the guaranteed prize fund resulted in one of the best attended open tournaments in recent Victoria history. The organizer Brian Raymer and director Greg Churchill hope to make it an annual event.
