General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!

1. What happen if CYCC 2nd place opts for Pan-Am tournament and becomes the Canadian official rep ?
2. If CYCC 2nd place opts for NAYCC, will the CYCC 3rd place becomes the Canadian official rep for Pan-Am then or nothing for the 3rd place winner ? That will be a shame, isn't it ?

I am still waiting for the CFC's answer. If the 2nd place in the CYCC becomes the official player of Canada for NAYCC, does that mean the 3rd place winner gets nothing.
I think this is not right as the flyer for the CYCC last year clearly stated that 1st place - WYCC / 2nd place - Pan Am and 3rd place for NAYCC. I supposed that there will be a budget for all the 3 categories.
I am not hopeful that CFC will reply to the above but I am just very disappointed as a Parent who has supported chess all these few years in Canada and to CFC.

Parent of a Canadian Junior Chess Player
Look Gary, I just had a car accident this past Monday three days ago which destroyed my car. I am dealing with the insurance company, the auto body shop, the police, the other driver's insurance company. I have a CFC meeting which is going on as we speak. I have a full schedule of lessons and am trying to relaunch a Windsor chess class on Friday night after two years without such a class. Putting something on Chesstalk is not the way to get a result.
The CFC criteria have been the same for the past three years with respect to these tournaments and are the same as the criteria which I posted. The value for these second and third place finishers is approximately $300 if they are chosen as the official player at one of these events. Anyone who participated at WYCC and finished tied for third received similar benefit through our new policy (new for the last three years) of paying the entry fees for WYCC for official players and those who finished second or third or even tied for second or third at CYCC.
It is not reasonable to ask that someone who finished third has priority over someone who finished first or second. What might be in a flyer from the organizers of CYCC where many different people are involved in the creation of these flyers is not something the CFC can be responsible for. I know that I corrected some things last year but it is possible that some things were missed. It is always best to go to the official communications from the CFC which have been consistent on this matter at least while I have been on the executive.
That being said I would like the section of the handbook to be rewritten to remove ambiguity. The intention when it was written (and I asked the people who wrote it) was that first place would have first choice of which tournament, followed by second place, followed by third place. The section was written some time ago when the Pan Am and North American usually followed CYCC. These days the tournaments often precede CYCC. Some have suggested that we move the CYCC much earlier in the year when no one except in the province where it is being held can play. I think it is probably better to rewrite the section of the handbook to reflect the current reality even if that means removing all references to NAYCC and Pan Am tournaments from the section of the handbook.
The cupboard on the youth fund is a bit bare after some heavier than usual expenditures for the last two WYCC's and also the addition of four teams sent to U16 Olympiad over the last two years. I hope that this year we can still do something for people that are caught in this situation but we can't spend more than we have and I have to be successful in convincing members of the executive to be able to do this.

>>Vlad, I am sorry to hear that you had an accident. I hope you are ok. I don't mean anything offensive but I had written to CFC without getting any reply.

>> What I m trying to say is the top 3 winners should be awarded as official players. 1st goes to WYCC which normally one does. If 2nd place chose NAYCC, then the 3rd should be also an official player as well since CFC has already budgeted for it. This is my point. the 3rd place winner should not be penalized just because the 2nd place chose NAYCC and it is beyond the 3rd place to do anything.

>> I just hope that CFC under you will consider the case above. The recognition that comes with it as an official player is invaluable for the player. Thank you in Advance

I am just copy and paste the following from the CFC handbook so that all parties will be clear on the qualifications as an official players.
Further, the CYCC flyers clearly stated that
1st goes to WYCC / 2nd goes to Pan-Am and 3rd goes to NAYCC.
In that case, I am sure CFC will have allocates the respective allocations for each winner ( which I am sure of ). Please have a heart for all the winners and not just 1 or 2. It's heart breaking to see if rules have been changed. Of course it can be changed but that will be for the future and please make sure it is being announced accordingly.
INVITED PLAYERS
a) Canadian Youth Chess Championship (CYCC) is a qualifier to international youth chess competitions.
Top 3 finishers in each section are qualified to become official representatives for:
1) World Youth Chess Championship (WYCC);
2) Pan American Youth Chess Championship;
3) North American Youth Chess Championship.
If the winner is unable to participate at WYCC, this fact shall be announced on the public CFC forum as soon as it becomes known.
If the winner is unable to participate, the second place finisher shall be invited to go in his place. If the second place finisher is unable to participate, the third place finisher shall be invited to go. If the third place finisher also declines, the highest finisher in the tournament who is willing to participate in the world event (if not rejected by CFC Executive due to the sub paragraph (d)), shall be selected. The CFC Board of Directors shall use an appropriate tie-breaking method to break ties if required to determine the order of finish.
All official representatives to WYCC should receive financial support from CFC to reduce their travel expenses.
CYCC is the national youth championship. Only the three tournaments (WYCC, NAYCC and Pan Am Youth Chess Festival) are determined by CYCC finish. There are many other tournaments which are decided by highest CFC rating when there are competing players. CYCC finances all youth activities so it is only fair that the finish at CYCC have some significance.
