2016 World Championship To Be Held In New York

    March 1, 2016

    By Peter Doggers at chess.com

The Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, the concrete jungle where dreams are made of. The 2016 World Championship will be held in New York City, as was announced today by Agon.

Long-held rumors that the next world title match will be held in the United States were confirmed today in a press release by marketing agency Agon, the organizer of the match. For the past few months Agon was in touch with several American cities, and eventually the choice was made: New York.

Like the last six matches, the contest will be a best of 12 and a possible tiebreak. The exact prize fund has not been announced yet but will be at least one million euros (U.S. $1.09 million).

The match will be held between Magnus Carlsen, the reigning world champion, and the winner of the Candidates‘ Tournament which is scheduled for 10-30 March, 2016 in Moscow, Russia.

Two of the eight participants in Moscow are representing the United States: Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura. The other six are Vishy Anand (India), Anish Giri (Netherlands), Sergey Karjakin and Peter Svidler (Russia), Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) and Levon Aronian (Armenia).

“I and all New Yorkers welcome the World Chess Championship back to New York City. What better place to be than the city where parks are often populated by chess enthusiasts," said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio in the official press release.

“New York is brilliant. We do not know much about the details yet, but this has the potential to be spectacular,” says the manager of Magnus Carlsen, Espen Agdestein, to NRK.

According to the Wall Street Journal, who broke the news earlier today, the organizers are in contact with “a number of New York venues, including the World Trade Center and other Manhattan locations.” Ilya Merenzon, the CEO of Agon, said: “Ideally, we’d like to take over retail spaces along Broadway—we have about five or six locations on the shortlist—so people can walk in and see [the match] through glass.”

Dylan Loeb McClain writing at worldchess.com says:

New York City is not an unfamiliar location for the World Championship. It was the site of the 1995 match atop the World Trade Center between then-champion Garry Kasparov and Anand. (At the time, there was a schism in the chess world, so the match was for the Professional Chess Association title, an organization that Kasparov had created. Most people, and certainly most fans, recognized the match as for the legitimate World Championship.)

There was also the 1990 World Championship match between Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov, the challenger and former champion, which was split between New York City and Lyon, France.

New York City was also one of the sites of the first World Championship match in 1886 between Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort. The match began on Jan. 11, in the Cartier’s Dancing Academy at No. 80 Fifth Avenue, before moving on to St. Louis and eventually to New Orleans.

prediction that Kirsan will be in NYC this November

Based on the ceasefire in Syria, now 4 days old, I predict that FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov will be in NYC to attend the opening of the WCh.

While it's true that the U.S. administration is extremely divided on Syria [neo cons seething with rage over the ceasefire, failure of regime change, lack of U.S. leadership, etc.], credit goes in part to U.S. Sec. of State John Kerry, who has managed to pull back the Turkish, Saudi and other regional regimes from sabotaging the ceasefire. Every day that passes means fewer deaths in Syria and a greater likelihood that the ceasefire will hold. It also means that the spurious claims about Kirsan's links with terrorism, based on doubtful claims on him having links to a Syrian bank, etc., are going to look pretty stupid when the terrorists, thanks to the very same Syrian government, the SAA, the Russian AF, etc., are completely routed and driven out of the country.

Yes, it's still possible that one part of the U.S. government (Treasury) can keep up the fiction while another part of the government (State Department, etc.) supports the tenuous peace, but they're probably going to want to cut their losses and save face. In the year of a U.S. election, nothing relating to foreign policy is clear, and all sorts of schemes, no doubt, will be hatched to discredit one candidate or another. By November the Americans may just want to put the humiliation of being in the back seat, instead of the driver's seat, when it comes to defeating terrorism in Syria, out of their minds, and it just doesn't make sense for them to clout themselves over the head and remind themselves, over and over again, that 4 years of fighting terrorism in Syria yielded squat compared to the wild successes of the Syrian Arab Army, the Russian AF, and the Iranians. Why keep reminding yourself how you screwed up?

One version of a sanitized history is to blame outgoing President Obama for being such a "dithering" President. And the neo cons will, one hopes, lick their wounds and move on. You win some, you lose some, Uncle Sam.

Kirsan. In NYC. It should be entertaining as hell to read the non-comments of all those who predicted his political demise.
Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.

World Championship to be held in New York City

2016 World Championship To Be Held In New York

        March 18, 2016

There is an article in the New York Times today entitled The New York Gambit by John Leland

        http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/20/ny...ide-nyt-region

The interesting feature is two photographs in colour of Nakamura and Caruana at 10 years old.

        Two extracts from the article:

The rise of big data has changed the way chess is played and the way it is taught, to the dismay of some who remember the days before Garry Kasparov lost to IBM's Deep Blue in 1997. These days, the phone in your pocket can beat the very best chess player on earth.

"It's removed some of the poetry of it," said Bruce Pandolfini, a celebrated chess instructor who taught Fabiano Caruana from age 5 to age 7. "Chess instills in you to work with a plan. Computers don't do that. They don't suggest plans. They just tell you what's the right move."

For players at the level of Mr. Nakamura and Mr. Caruana, this means scouring databases to study their opponents' preferred openings and the moves that the computer says are most likely to prevail against them. Their seconds are often computer specialists.

I think history will show that Nakamura is the last great warrior in chess. He may never win, nor even play for, the WC, but he is the strongest player in the world who plays a style that can be considered outside of the 'computer style' that is exemplified by Carlsen and many others in the top 100.

This Nakamura style -- not limited to Nakamura, but he is the best at it -- is one that I would call adventurous. It doesn't follow a plan, as in "If I do this, such and such is going to happen and I will come out a little bit ahead". Instead, it involves a state of mind: "I am expected to choose between these 3 moves, but this is the moment of opportunity, and even though I can't predict what will come of it, I am going to play THIS other move!"

The fact that Carlsen consistently beats Nakamura (when they don't draw) is evidence that the computer-style will win out and perhaps forever stifle chess. The other evidence is that draws are becoming so pervasive at the top levels that chess spectators are like dogs at the kitchen table, waiting for little crumbs of food to fall to the floor to be gobbled up. Nakurama touches his King and loses -- wow, that was delicious! A blunder here, a blunder there... yum, yum!

That is not a recipe for success when chess has so many other factors going against it (spectator-wise). Nakamura is not long for the chess world, and what other great warrior is there to spice up the proceedings? Whether it's Carlsen - Anand, or Carlsen - Karjakin, or Carlsen - Aronian.... it's just another big yawn and the future for standard chess holds nothing but more of the same. The computer style is so inevitable because it is so safe. It takes a warrior to go outside the bounds of safety.

Something that might save the day (for tournament chess, but not match chess) would be to make a win and a loss in chess more valuable than 2 draws, whether by tie-breaks or by actual points. Then you would see some warrior mentality take hold once again and new vistas open up in chess. Engines, after all, always will have a horizon effect. They can lose to adventurism.

Should this ever come about, then a further necessary change would be to make the WC a tournament and not a match. Yes, a match is great for true chess fans (i.e. skilled players), but can lead to stifling non-adventurous play over many, many games. For general spectator appeal, which top level chess is so in need of, you want more adventurous play, and that would be the combination of tournament play with the extra rewards of going for wins.
          Only the rushing is heard...
          Onward flies the bird.

World Championship to be held in New York City

            Crown Match

MOSCOW, May 23 /TASS/. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) considers the NYC Mayor’s Office and Trump Tower to be the most likely venues for a match for the world chess title between Norwegian Magnus Carlsen and Russian chess player Sergey Karyakin, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov told TASS.

"At present, we are looking for a venue. We have a list of possible places, including the NYC Mayor’s Office. We have sent a letter to billionaire Donald Trump with a request to allow holding the match in Trump Tower."

Ilyumzhinov said it would not be a problem for him to visit the United States.

A match for the world chess crown is to take place in New York on September 9-30 this year.

There is a translation error in the TASS message - it will be in November. Russian version: "Матч за звание чемпиона мира должен состояться с 9 по 30 ноября 2016 года в Нью-Йорке."

                July 17, 2016

Still no word on the venue for the WCC in New York City from AGON.

                http://worldchess.com/nyc2016/

Karjakin said this recently in an interview:

“We are still completely in the dark - I want to believe that FIDE is organizing everything properly, I still trust Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, but would like to have confirmation as soon as possible" .

The applicant recognizes that the United States - an undesirable place for him to play. "I would be most comfortable in Moscow, but also any European country would be better than the United States."

                http://www.dagbladet.no/sport/carlse...oskva/60323325

AGON has previously stated that the title match will take place in New York, but the controversial promoter has neither complied with earlier promises of sending out players' personal contracts or advertising of play facilities.

Several international experts think the reason is that AGON encountered major economic challenges in the US world metropolis, which will allow the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to intervene and move the match to Russia instead.

From the AGON Ltd. (A USA Company) website ( http://www.agonlimited.com/about/ ): "Chess is now played by more people than ever before: around the world, online and off, over 600 million adults play regularly – a number comparable to regular users of Facebook. Chess app is installed on over a billion smartphones.
To ennoble the game and engage with this existing global audience, AGON is bringing the Chess Championship Cycle to spectacular venues in world cities and transforming chess into a spectator sport using cutting-edge data visualization technology.
World Chess is poised to emerge as a force in sports entertainment, backed up by a strong brand identity, animated by recognisable heroes in front of an existing enormous fanbase, financially supported by “best in class” global marketing partners."

Given the Ilyumzhinov and AGON track records, I have very little faith in any statements on anything from either of them.

But I believe FIDE is still under the direct control now of the Greek VP, Makropolous, and the Presidential Committee of FIDE? I believe FIDE as currently run will, if needed, step in and save the day, and hold a match worth viewing. FIDE cannot afford to blow the publicity and $$ associated with a Magnus event.

Maybe we should have one of those polls. I would guess that the main choices would be:

                    New York City

The U.S.A. other than New York City

                    Moscow

                    Russia other than Moscow

                    Norway

A European city other than one in Norway or Russia
