There are three Canadians playing in the Reykjavik Open 2016. Dale R. Haessel, Nicolas Haynes, and Michael Dougherty all won their R1 games today. They're all in tough tomorrow on boards 11, 18, and 22 respectively, against 2 GMs and an IM.

The first game to finish is an 18 move miniature from the always entertaining Richard Rapport. (:

Dale draws his GM opponent with Black. An excellent result!

Today's a double round, starting at noon EST, and both Dale Haessel and Michael Doherty have GM opponents on boards 21 and 22 respectively, so will likely have their games broadcast live at ChessBomb. Oddly enough, the top 2 seeds, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Dmitry Andreikin both appear to be taking byes since the #3 seed, Richard Rapport, is on board one against IM Marc Esserman.

All 3 Canadians have positive scores. Nicolas Haynes has 3/4 while both Michael Dougherty and Dale Haessel have 2.5/4.

IM Tania Sachdev is having quite the tournament, an undefeated 5.5/7, just a 1/2 point behind the two GM co-leaders, Abhijeet Gupta and Sergei Movsesian, and tied with the likes of the elite GMs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Richard Rapport. She plays her 5th consecutive GM tomorrow, Gawain Jones tomorrow.

Richard Rapport got away with 1. ...h6 and 2. ...g5 today. I can't wait to see what he plays against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov on board 2 tomorrow. (:

IM Tania Sachdev finished an undefeated 7/10, playing GMs her final 7 rounds, and evidently picked up her 2nd GM norm with a round to spare. Kudos!
