U.S. Chess Blitz Round Robin 2016

    April 26, 2016

The tournament has the following format:

    • It will be a four player sextuple Round Robin. Each player will play against the other six times.
    • The time control is 5 mins + 3 seconds delay (not increment)
    • The prize fund is 1st $20,000, 2nd $15000, 3rd 10000 and 4th $5000
    • The first game begins at 1 p.m. local time in Saint Louis. This would be 2 p.m. Toronto/Montreal time.

The games can be watched live on

Blitz Round Robin 1-3 Thursday, April 28
Blitz Round Robin 4-6 Friday, April 29
    ________

This is the first time Garry will play publicly after he crushed Nigel Short 8.5-1.5 in blitz a year ago.

Asked for comment, Nigel tweeted this:

I predict Kasparov will have more trouble than he did against that useless old git he played last year.
    ________

On chessbase.com a recent poll “Who do you think will win this blitz tournament?” had this result:

    Garry Kasparov 36%
    Hikaru Nakamura 53%
    Fabiano Caruana 7%
    Wesley So 2%

My opinion is that Garry still has a lot of good chess in him and I see a tie between him and Nakamura. Is there a betting line on the contest?

Re: U.S. Chess Blitz Round Robin 2016

Was watching live at one point when Kasparov seemed to let go of a Knight (against Nakamura ! which is a sweet bit of karma)
and then moved the (same) Knight elsewhere...

THIS caused a great kerfuffle with the commentators (Jen Shahade and Yasser IcantspellSierewan and Maurice Ashley...)
but the concensus was that in blitz, it is 'press clock' not 'touch move' (all providing you move the piece originally touched).

Amusing how much excitement that caused - all the more since Naka is now famous/infamous for the two-handed castling
and the restrospective J'adoube against Aronian... :)
...Mike Pence: the Lord of the fly.

At the end of Round Seven, everyone is tied at 3.5! It looks like Garry is starting to tire. The games are unrated, probably because Garry doesn’t have a rating, being retired.

            Round Eight

Yasser, Jennifer and Maurice are commentating as fast as they can with the games blitzing by. Kasparov is having trouble with the clock. He is even near the end and then blunders, shakes Nakamura’s hand and leaves the room.

Maurice says to Wesley that he wasn’t playing well, then he took off his jacket and things improved. Wesley says at the first he was fighting for his life and that even though Garry has been retired for 10 years, he has such a lot of energy, he can see how formidable he was a player in his prime.

On the other hand, Hikaru expected more energy and passion from Garry. He says that he gave him the benefit of the doubt in that touching incident.

              U.S. Blitz 2016

              April 29, 2016

              Some comments from yesterday’s action:

              Tarjei J. Svensen –

              Same old Kasparov!
              - watch on left side
              - adjusting knights pre-game
              - going for the throat
              - pissed when losing

Robin van Kampen – Thank you Kasparov for providing a compelling reason to procrastinate studying

              - Love Kasparov! The think after the opening, screwing the pieces into the board, the King move before the attack..

              - Please explain how practical blitz strategy changes when using delay versus increment?

Abhijeet Gupta - How is Wesley making Kasparov blunder his knight again and again ?

              - Garry hung more Knights than Salahadin

Maurice Ashley is the leading cheerleader during these matches. A kibitzer parodies him:

Maurice could make anything interesting you know. Maurice: Look at that snail moving! Slowly but crushing every single step! He is going for it and the snail seems like he is gonna make it!! Ladies and gentleman the snail is doing it!! Be carefull other snails because this one is crushing!

Caruana is winning but hangs his queen in time pressure.

                  Conclusions and Comments

                  1) It is great to see Kasparov back. He’s lost several steps but still is a powerful presence. Garry said it wasn’t the knight blunders that worried him, but the game he lost to So. He felt like an amateur. But by beating Caruana and Nakamura at the end, he proved to himself that he still can play.

                  2) The format is very entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Some would like a slightly slower time limit, so there aren’t so many mistakes. It also would be good to have both boards and men showing or to stagger the games so we are only analyzing one at a time.

                  3) Wesley So has done much better than one had forecast. He played practice blitz games with Alex Lenderman. Second place finish.
Yasser said that So's game against Kasparov in Round 10 was one which he will always remember.

                  4) Perhaps only MVL and Carlsen could do well among this group.

                  Tweets

2700 Chess – If this blitz were rated then Kasparov’s 9.5/18 would mean TPR 2779, Blitz Rating 2796 and World Blitz #13

Garry Kasparov – Nice job, Hikaru, but I won the senior division!

Hikaru Nakamura - Happy to have won the Ultimate Blitz today! More importantly, it was an honor to play against the former WC Garry Kasparov, who is still a boss!

Kasparov is obviously still a beast! 11 yrs retired, and spots his competition 25yrs and 30yrs+!! Wins the Nakamura and Caruana overall portions, and overall plus (despite all those blunders). Absolutely incredible!!!!!

Not being a big fan of Garry as a person and as a chess politician, I have to say that his performance is absolutely amazing. He performed close to 2800 against much younger players, one of them (Nakamura) is extremely strong in blitz.

Sure, 18 blitz games not enough to measure Garry's current real strength. However, I think he could be top-5 player for sure and very likely top-2. During and after Candidate tournament one could hear different opinions about the best and most interesting opponent for the Championship Match against Carlsen. Caruana, Aronian, Kramnik, Giri, Nakamura.... NO! Kasparov.

Right now FIDE has a problem to sell Carlsen - Karjakin match. This mission could be much easier for the match Carlsen - Kasparov.

Just came back from St.Louise: if Garry really wanted to, in a few months of training and practicing he would crush everyone and everybody! Instead we'll have Kariakin "Krimnash" to be announced by Russia's controlled FIDE the next world champion! Unless Carlsen will take a huge political risk of going to Russia to play and get under all kind of sanctions... LOL! Or maybe Canada will host the match? Why not, maybe with the AGON's help! Lets enjoy!

                            U.S. Blitz Round Robin 2016

                            May 2, 2016

The official site says this: Games are unrated.

There may be other reasons for this but the two I think of is that Kasparov is officially retired and he is banned from any FIDE event for a period of two years.

Silvio Danailov said this during an interview on the last day of Norway Chess but the official statement seems to only limit K. in a voting capacity, so we are probably wrong about that.

                            FIDE Ethics Commission Judgement says:

Mr Kasparov and Mr Leong are both banned for a period of two (2) years from holding any office or position within FIDE, including its member federations, continental associations or any other affiliated international organisations, as well as participating in any FIDE meeting as delegate, proxy-holder or other representative of a FIDE member.

This ban will be effective from the period 21 October 2015 until 20 October 2017.
