    AGON placed under probation

    May 2, 2016

On the Chessdom site, there is this tantalizing sentence under the title “Changes in FIDE Grand Prix”:

Following the certain issues that arose during the Candidates Tournament in Moscow, the FIDE Presidential Board has placed AGON under probation until the Congress in Baku.

On the English Chess Forum site there has been speculation as to what this means. One idea:

    - There are rumors about Agon failing to find sponsors for the match in New York and pressure to move the world championship to Russia. This might be the first formal step of FIDE in that direction.

Tempest in a teapot? Nothing I can see on the FIDE site.

Evidently Agon is sensitive to the rumors of it switching the World Championship venue from New York City.

This appeared on its website today:

    MAY 2, 2016

Agon Statement Regarding The Venue For The World Championship Match In New York

While it is not the company’s policy to comment on tittle-tattle and gossip, we note the idle speculation that the city for the World Championship Match in November has yet to be finalised.

We are delighted to re-confirm that the World Championship Match will take place in New York in November. Any suggestion to the contrary is nonsense.

The venue and the sponsor line-up will be announced in due course.

I thought Agon was an acronym but I found this definition on Wikipedia:

Agon (Classical Greek ἀγών) is an ancient Greek word in reference to several things. In general, the term refers to a struggle or contest. In its broader sense of a struggle or contest, agon referred to a contest in athletics, chariot or horse racing, music or literature at a public festival in ancient Greece.

AGONY (noun), from the Greek word AGON ..... extreme physical or mental suffering.

"Oh! dreadful is the check - intense the agony" ..... (Emily Bronte on playing chess?)
