Re: Grand Chess Tour Leuven, 2016

Now we'll just have to hope he stays there. Thats a very competitive crowd. It will be great to see Richard getting more top invites. Hes a very creative player.
(another one who is struggling to get back is Jobava. I enjoyed his two games against the Shak (althought they were only speed games) at the Eurasian blitz.))

(Peter Doggers) - The longest game of Round 8 was Topalov vs Nakamura, which reached the infamous R vs RN endgame. Many fans will immediately name the game Polgar-Kasparov from Dos Hermanas 1996 as arguably the most famous example of the stronger side actually winning. Garry Kasparov himself surely was thinking about that game too as he entered the playing hall in Leuven and witnessed everything from the back of the room! (On Monday night the 13th world champion will give a lecture here about his book Winter is Coming.)

      ________

(ChessBase) - It was an incredibly hard-fought nine rounds of blitz in which only Levon Aronian managed squeak ahead of the rest by half a point with 5.5/9, allowing him to take clear third in the combined standings with 15.5 points. Carlsen, So, Nakamura and Kramnik all scored 5.0/9 leaving Magnus Carlsen still in clear first with 17 points, trailed by Wesley So with 16.

      - Remember that the final blitz rounds start two hours earlier

      - Great commentary by Eric Handsome

      - Nakamura - Carlsen 1/2. The world champion missed a win in a king and pawn endgame

      - Carlsen - Caruana 0-1. Mate on the board!

      - Kramnik: "I become much stronger once there are less pieces on the board because it’s much harder to blunder them!"

      - I just like the vividness of this tournament, with all the ups and downs including all of the players.

      - giri's really struggling

wesley and MVL continue to impress 'me'

      - MVL is surely the finest player to emerge from the land of Corneille since La Bourdonnais.

(Lennart Ootes) - It's sunny in Leuven. Perfect day for a Leffe beer on the terrace in between Blitz rounds of the Grand Chess Tour :)

Re: Grand Chess Tour Leuven, 2016

Once again, Ding Liren was briefly the #1 Blitz player in the world with his 2875 rating after Carlsen's R10 draw with Aronian. Carlsen regained his throne with a R11 win against Topalov.

MVL's win against Nakamura in R10 means the #3 spot in world ranking is very much up for grabs as there's now less than 2 live rating points separating these two.

              ________

              The closing ceremonies were televised.

The players lined up on the stage. I was amused that Wesley So was announced as playing pragmatic but entertaining chess.

Magnus Carlsen was the first place winner, followed by Wesley So and Levon Aronian.

Malcolm Pein: "We prepared three trophies, one for the rapid, blitz and overall. But one man won them all!"

Two of the three trophies that Magnus won were crystal boxes filled with fine Belgian chocolates.

Carlsen's 1/3 in the last 3 rounds means that Ding Liren is now the #1 rated Blitz player in the world.

I think it's safe to say that Caruana has shed his image as a poor Blitz player, picking up 135.2 points in Paris and Leuven and moving from #82 to #8. Conversely, Kramnik lost 127.6 points and fell from #6 to #42.
