    Baku Chess Olympiad 2016

    June 15, 2016

The 42nd Chess Olympiad will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from September 1 to September 14, 2016.

At a press conference recently, Mr. Mahir Mamedov shared several details of the preparation process in his capacity as Director of the Operational Committee of the Baku Chess Olympiad:

The venue of the opening ceremony of the Olympiad has been finalized. It will be held at the National Gymnastics Arena, which satisfies all high international standards. Besides, by the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, a visa regime for the participants has been simplified. We work in close cooperation with various structures, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Transport etc.

He said there will be 70 buses for the needs of the guests. We signed contracts with the hotels where the participants will be accommodated. All of them are situated in the sea zone, not far from the Crystal Hall. The Hall as a super modern complex, is ready to host the event, and the media centre satisfies all standards. We also are giving a lot of attention to security.

During the event, an official mascot of the Baku Olympiad was presented – a boy clad in a national dress – Shakh oglan. The author is Musa Changiev, who received an award for winning the competition among 600 various variations. Besides, the participants of the press-conference started a chess clock, symbolizing a countdown of 100 days before the start of the Olympiad.

Further, M. Mamedov touched upon the issue of the captain of the core men’s team of Azerbaijan. It was noted that ex-World Champion A. Khalifman is no longer captain. It was mutually decided to stop the cooperation. Soon the name of the new captain will be announced.

During the press-conference FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov replied to a number of questions:

The issue of the participation of Armenian team in the Baku Olympiad was raised.

He said that when in Armenia, I met with the President of the country S. Sargsian, who is also the President of the local chess Federation and this issue was raised. For the moment they confirmed that they are intending to play in Baku. There is no refusal from their side for the moment. During the press-conference in Yerevan, the leader of the Armenian team L. Aronian also confirmed that he was intending to participate and warmly recollected his participation in the Baku World Cup and a walk in the capital of Azerbaijan. When I was in Yerevan, I once again invited the Armenian chess players, journalists and head of the Armenian Chess Federation S. Sargsian to participate in the Baku Chess Olympiad," Ilyumzhinov said.

Besides, the FIDE President informed that in the immediate future a chess messenger will be introduced. He said: “I was recently contacted by the Telegram messenger representative, who offered to create a chess messenger. The proposal was based on the fact that chess is popular in the whole world. I do not think this messenger will be very different from existing ones, but it will have some applications connected to chess. The messenger presentation will take place very soon. ”

    _________

It is said that more than 3,000 players from 170 countries (a male and female team from each) will participate.

Rashad Asianov, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Argentina told the La Nacion newspaper recently:

“The State of Azerbaijan with the assistance of the private sector formed the Organizing Committee with a budget of 13,000,000 Euros (six of which will be allocated to housing in 1st class chess players and leaders) and who will be responsible for logistics challenge (accommodation, transfers, services and security). The fabulous covered stadium Baku Crystal Hall (capacity 25,000 spectators) was chosen to host the event, and already successfully passed testing control experts.

Argentines visiting Baku in September will not suffer with the weather; at that time of year the days seem to March here is the transition from summer to fall, but windy. There is also a good transport service, in subways, taxis and bus, to travel and visit the works of ancient and modern architecture, such as the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, Tower of Maidens or the Museum of Modern Art.

Baku is not an expensive city; maybe even somewhat cheaper than Buenos Aires. Our currency is the Manat, and a dollar has the value of 1.5 manat. You can have lunch or dinner with $ 10, and consume soft drinks or coffee from $0.50 to $3.”

With the social violence that is shaking Europe and the horror of its attacks, security is the point of greatest attention of the organizers. "It is a sensitive and very important issue for all of us; President Ilham Aliyev took command and gave the order to guarantee the safety of all participants and guests of the competition," Aslanov said.

Does that include the Armenian team?

“Yes, of course. We are open to receive all communities. the Armenian chess players played in the Chess Cup in 2015 and there was no incident.”

It is interesting to follow the arrangements for travel and accommodation as the time for the Olympiad to begin nears.

The teams will be allocated in hotels according to the decision of the Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee, based on the teams’ performance in the previous Olympiad and informed about the hotel they will be staying in after they have registered to the Olympiad, as they will receive their registration confirmation. All teams (6 persons) will get two free double rooms and two free single rooms with full board. The open and women teams from the same Federation will be accommodated in the same Hotel.

      _______

      Travel Subsidy

      See:

      http://www.fide.com/images/stories/N...list-final.pdf

Evidently teams are eligible for travel subsidies of either 9300 euros per team or 7320, 4800 or 3000.

See the chart at the above link.

44 African countries get subsidies. Nigeria and South Africa are excepted, being too rich.

There are 52 Asian countries but, as you might expect ones like Australia, India Japan, Kuwait, New Zealand, Qatar and Saudi Arabia get none.

There are 55 countries from Europe and 34 from the Americas. The rich countries of the Americas are Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States. Everyone else gets the subsidy.

Very edifying to see in print who are the haves and the have-nots.

The candidate with the most votes becomes Team Captain.

        d) All votes for Team Captains must be cast and submitted no later than 90 days before the start of the Olympiad.

              Baku Chess Olympiad 2016

              July 3, 2016

Boris Gelfand will not be playing in the Olympiad. He recently gave an interview with his views on this and chess as a career:

              https://chess24.com/en/read/news/gel...-baku-olympiad

Colin McGourty: Boris Gelfand will not play in the 2016 Olympiad in Baku, his first absence from the world’s top team event since he moved from Belarus to Israel in 1998. The reason is a dispute with the Israeli Chess Federation management, who he accuses in a recent interview of having “absolutely forgotten about such things as the prestige of the country”. The interview covers much more than that sad topic, though, including Boris’ thoughts on how lucky his generation was to be able to combine the best of the pre-computer age with new technology.

Gelfand was runner-up at this year's Aeroflot Open.

The difficult situation for Israel’s top chess players was evident last year when the country failed to send a team to the European Team Championship, and little seems to have changed since. Although a team will go to the Olympiad, it’s going to be one without Gelfand, Ilia Smirin or Emil Sutovsky. On his Facebook page Emil claimed that the dispute was about showing who’s boss rather than money:

Gelfand has played in 11 Olympiads - once for the USSR (team gold in 1990), then twice for Belarus and then all eight Olympiads for Israel from 2000-2014, bringing his country silver medals in 2008 and bronze in 2010. Gelfand is still active and comfortably his country’s best player, as can be seen in the latest FIDE rankings for July 2016 (Rodshtein, Postny, Nabaty, Roiz and Baron were picked for the team).
              ________

If you have a strong, rich federation and sponsors and coaches, one would think that participating in the Olympiad would be a snap.
I am watching the Azerbaijan experience. They have oil money backing the tournament but its value is not what it once was and they trying to limit all the teams to just 14 days of expenses. As with all Olympiads, their prestige is on the line.

They have their teams in training. This lately:

Azerbaijani chess players expected to participate in the 42nd World Chess Olympiad in Baku are continuing their training for the competition. The first team comprised of Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Teimour Radjabov, Arkadij Naiditsch, Eltaj Safarli and Rauf Mamedov is undergoing the initial stage of preparations in Gabala.

The press service of the Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee reports that the team is training in Gabala under the captaincy of French grandmaster Etienne Bacrot.

Etienne Bacrot has updated the press service of the Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee on the progress of the training process. “We are located in a beautiful place. All the necessary conditions are available for effective training. The Azerbaijani team includes some of the world’s best grandmasters. Therefore, there is an excellent understanding among all of us. I am well aware of the importance of the Baku Chess Olympiad for Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijan team has always been among the favorites of all competitions. Noted for a very strong level of its players, the team has done well in European championships. In the 42nd World Chess Olympiad, too, the Azerbaijan team will do its best to delight its fans.”

The Azerbaijan men’s team will conduct three training sessions in the time left for the World Chess Olympiad. There are also plans to play a friendly match with a foreign team.
              ________

One hates to leave Boris without a few more words. His answer to this question:

Do you often recall your chess school in Minsk?

Of course. To this day we’re still very close. When I played a World Championship match my friends and all the trainers turned up to support me. That was very touching. I was very lucky – me and the people of my age: we got a good education and then, when computers entered our lives, we were still flexible enough to get used to them and adapt our knowledge. So we learned both to work with trainers and to exploit the benefits of the computer. Chess players even just 5-10 years older were already absolutely unable to adapt, while those who were younger, on the contrary, didn’t get as much as they should have from books and personal contact. By the way, that gap can still constantly be felt. Only a few of the young – those who, in essence, are geniuses – can get by without it. Overall, though, even with strong players, grandmasters, you can often sense a lack of schooling.

They don’t grasp the game as a whole, but individual moves i.e. rather than seeing the whole picture they only see fragments, though there again it’s about their own relation to chess. Today there’s no problem finding a professional trainer, but they simply don’t see the point in that. Working with someone, adjusting, paying money – why bother, if you’ve got a computer? And up to a certain level it really is faster with the computer. You press a button and you get information that at times we spent years accumulating. My trainer and I do, of course, also turn to the computer, but only to check which move it recommends in a concrete situation. Otherwise the computer can completely suppress your human creativity.

Vassily Ivanchuk still will not play for Ukraine at the Olympics

The Ukrainian team will travel to Baku to fight for Olympic medals without their longtime leader Vassily Ivanchuk. Head coach Alexander Sulypa said the following will play for the national team:

                Ruslan Ponomariov
                Pavel Eljanov
                Anton Korobov
                Yuriy Krivoruchko
                Andrei Volokitin

Previously, we reported that Ivanchuk did not plan to play in the main team tournament of the year, but Sulypa hoped that the veteran would change his mind, but he has not.

Interview with the FIDE Vice President, the Chairman of Anti-Cheating Committee Israel Gelfer

As the Chairman of the Anti-Cheating Committee and the person, who is in charge of all anti-cheating measures, what can you say about the coordination of anti-cheating with the organizers?

First of all, I would like to explain the general idea of anti-cheating. Unfortunately, the issue of anti-cheating became important in the last years. I think cheating appeared at the same moment when people showed up on Earth.

In the last couple of years and specially with the development of telecommunication technologies (mobiles, watches and even glasses) we are facing a problem which we cannot ignore. We are trying to balance between our will to fight against cheaters and at the same time not to create unhealthy atmosphere in the chess world. We don't want to look like a police, which comes to every event and checks everyone. At the same time we cannot ignore the problem. Unfortunately there were several cases discovered. We all know about the big case during the Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk. The cheater was caught after the Olympiad.

During the forthcoming Olympiad we will make some precocious measures.

Of course, there will be gates for security. It's mainly for security but it will also produce a sound if someone has anything small in the pocket. The players will be not allowed to bring mobiles, watches and pens. The organizers will provide pens for every player.

Apart from it there is a new thing, which we would like to bring to all FIDE tournaments. FIDE is purchasing a new device, a very modern and a very sophisticated one, which actually identifies everything. On the last Presidential Board we decided that probably after every round of the Olympiad and sometimes during the game we will check the players. It's very effective and very quick (5-6 seconds). Klaus Deventer is a Deputy Arbiter during the Olympiad and also one of the members of our Committee. He will have other specially trained arbiters, who will help to check all four matches in women and men sections and also randomly chosen players (8-10 players each round). It's like we are doing anti-doping after the games. We are still checking the possibility to secure and block the whole area in Baku by using jammers. We already tried it during the World Cup but didn't succeed. In any case, we are going to use all other measures.

Will you have a games delay during the Olympiad? It has already been used and I'm sure the spectators were not happy about it. It also affects a lot the media work.

We have decided that there will be no delay. We are fighting for this because we don't want to destroy the whole communication, live transmission of the games to the World etc. To have a delay is not a disaster but we came to a conclusion that we are ready to have all the measures I've spoken about, and only then to have a delay. Live transmission, press communication and interest of all spectators are important for us.

I would like to mention that all the games will be also checked live with the system of Professor Regan, which belongs to FIDE. If there is a very-very strong indication that someone is playing much above his level than the Chief Arbiter of the Olympiad will be informed about it in order to have special check in.

To summarize everything that you have said before, can we make a conclusion that FIDE and Organizers are ready to fight against any cheater and can we say that the players and their coaches can sleep peacefully before and during the Olympiad?

Yes, we are ready! I don’t mean that nobody is going to cheat. Who knows. We can compare our situation with athletics and doping control, where they have the war of labs. Maybe the cheaters are smarter than we are, maybe the cheaters are more advanced than we are. I hope not and I hope the measures will cover all theoretical cheating possibilities, which may arise.

                    The Device that Detects Everything

In the news today, there is a condemnation of so-called bomb detectors, being used by the security forces in Iraq that do not work.

There was a report on the devices in 2010 on the BBC, which said:

The UK government has announced a ban on the export to Iraq and Afghanistan of some so-called "bomb detectors". It follows an investigation by the BBC's Newsnight programme, which found that one type of "detector" made by a British company cannot work. The Iraqi government has spent $85m on the ADE-651 and there are concerns that they have failed to stop bomb attacks.

There is nothing to program in these cards. There is no memory. There is no microcontroller. There is no way any form of information can be stored.

The ADE-651 detector has never been shown to work in a scientific test. There are no batteries and it consists of a swivelling aerial mounted to a hinge on a hand-grip. Critics have likened it to a glorified dowsing rod. The training manual for the device says it can even, with the right card, detect elephants, humans and 100 dollar bills.

These are the cheapest bit of electronics that you can get that look vaguely electronic and are sufficiently flat to fit inside a card. The ADE-651 has been sold to a range of Middle Eastern countries and as far afield as Bangkok for eye-watering prices. The device is sold by the firm, based at offices in Somerset. Iraq paid around $40,000 for each device. No Western government uses them.
                    _________

Do you suppose that FIDE has bought a box of ADE-651 detectors for use in the Olympiad?

No Svidler for Russia. No Gelfand and Smirin for Israel. No Kamsky for USA. No Ivanchuk for Ukraine. Likely, no Anand for India. Each team has it's own situation, each player has his own reasons. However, all of them have something in common: they are 40+ years old. This generation disappears from Olympiad.

                            Baku Chess Olympiad, 2016

                            July 7, 2016

Where will Vassily Ivanchuk be during the Baku Olympiad?

Ivanchuk will be participating in a checkers tournament in the Polish city of Karpacz from the 5th to 10th of September.
He has played in a checkers tournament before, in the Dutch Open, last year. See photos at:

                            http://chess-news.ru/node/19574

Karpacz is a lovely city in the south of Poland close to Czech Border. Very easy to get there. You can go by car. From Amsterdam just 8h drive (920km), from Berlin 3,5h (320 km), Prague just 180km but you need to cross mountains so it is almost 3 hours by car.

In the list of participants, the top rating is Roel Boomstra of the Netherlands with 2422. Ivanchuk is seeded 58th with a rating of 1956.
