  • Checkmate London 2016

Richard Rapport is taking a bit of a risk playing in Checkmate London 2016 where he needs to go 7/9 (i.e. +5) just to maintain his #18 ranking but so far, so good, with 3.5/4.

Richard has now passed Judit Polgar's peak rating of 2735 and is fast closing in on Peter Leko's 2763 for Hungary's top ever rated player. Go Richard!

The beat goes on! A near perfect 5.5/6 and the new #17 in live rating (albeit 2700chess hasn't updated their site quite yet). With wins being the 1st tie-break, Richard has just about clinched winning this event.

Yes congratulations to Richard for finally achieving the elite 2750+ mark. You can bet other players are noticing.

Richard is definitely on the elite's radar, Hans. I was amused earlier this year (Tata Steel 2016) when Anish Giri drew Sergey Karjakin's Nimzo-Larzen Attack (previously a favourite opening of Rapport) with some home preparation that Giri said was designed to "bore Richard Rapport to death". Of course, Richard is the only player younger than Giri among the 2750+ crowd. (:
