  • 15 games from 2009 Ontario Open now at chess5.com

I've posted 15 of the best games from the top section of the 2009 Ontario Open in Ottawa on the site chess5.com, with more to come in the days ahead. I was planning to get to this task sooner, but other priorities have taken my time.

Highlights include the outstanding games Samsonkin 1-0 Sambuev, Gerzhoy 0-1 Samsonkin, and Samsonkin 1-0 Sapozhnikov. There are two tragic losses on time which are posted: Tuxanidy-Torres 0-1 Sabuev, and Sapozhnikov 1-0 Filipovich, with the players who had held the advantage throughout the games being sadly victimized.

    Enjoy the games!! :) :) :)

I've added another seven games today from this event at chess5.com. Highlights include the tactical slugfest Filipovich 1-0 Gordon, the key last round battles involving the leaders: Pacey 1/2 Samsonkin and Sambuev 1-0 Doubleday, the original Dutch Defence game Gerzhoy 1-0 Barron, and a really interesting game in the Ruy Lopez Archangelsk, Sapozhnikov 1-0 Sadeghi. More games to come in the days ahead. Enjoy the games!! :) :) :)

Yesterday I added another six games to chess5.com from the 2009 Ontario Open. Also, I corrected a typo in the gamescore of Samsonkin -- Kirby from round one; thanks to Patrick pointing this out. Enjoy the games!! :) :)

Thanks for posting the games Frank.

Re. my game vs. Michael Barron, 43) ... b4 would have been winning, or close to winning e.g. 44) Kc2 f5 45) Kb3 Bc5 Passed pawns have to be pushed!

Re. my game vs. David Gordon, I think you are right that 22. d:e was best. I didn't play it because of ... Bf6 23. e:f7+ K:f7 24. K:g2 Rad8! when Black has some real play. I rejected the simple 23. e5 without analysis, oversimply concluding that his Kt @ g2 would then be protected, however this would have been more dynamic, and strongest.

I did consider 32. Ng5 for a few minutes before thankfully seeing at the last moment that it would lose a piece to Rg4+ (ugh!!), a 1-mover that is somehow not easy to see.
