  • a game to go with your morning coffee

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1289113 One of my favorite Canadian games! I enjoyed doing fun Halloween annotations of it when I was editor of Chess Canada.

Thanks for this game Hans. I've been spending a lot of time with Yasser and he often mentions the "Winter of Zuk" in reference to Robert Zuk. Canadians would regularly attend Northwest US events but there was one period where Zuk was extremely ruthless and went a long time without a loss supposedly.

Great game. The kind of game where my patzer eyes realize only afterwards that white was in trouble long before his position started to look bad.

My memory is patchy sometimes. It tells me: " Didnt Gordon Taylor write the article: The Winter of Zuk and if so, Gordon, could you please provide a link!?
Eric, I envy you your time with Yasser but hes an incredible source of chess culture and erudition. Lucky you!

"The Zuk Winter (1970-71)" appeared on pp 18-21 of En Passant, April 1996 (the first issue of full magazine size).

Chessgames.com continues their Canadian "Tomb" theme with today's 'game of the day' between Dmitri Feoktistov and Maroun Tomb from the Quebec-ch U20, 2003 and appropriately entitled "Tomb of Horrors". (:

The Harper vs Zuk game cited is one of my all-time favourites!

For your enjoyment, I offer a game of mine on a somewhat similar theme, from 1999:
