Once again, ChessBomb has 2 Canadian games but, surprisingly, not Razvan's. ):

Raja's game got dropped for some reason but here's another Canadian game with Janak having a very nice position. (:

Assuming the Azeri GM, Vasif Durarbayli, gets the full point against the tournament leader, Victor Bologan, it appears there will be a 3-way tie for 1st heading into the 9th and final round between Durabayli, Hungarian GM Gabor Papp, and Russian GM Alex Shimanov. If Bologan holds, then sustitute Bologan for Durarbayli. I thought the young American teenager, IM Ruifeng Li, might join the lead but he sacricied two Rooks for a forced draw against American GM, Alexsandr Lenderman. ):

I believe Razvan's win in R8 against GM Sergey Erenburg bumped his TPR above 2600 so he should just need a draw in the final round for his final GM norm. My guess is he'll be White against GM Alexsandr Lenderman but I could be wrong on the pairing.

The Georgian GM, Tamaz Gelashvili, and the Russian GM, Alex Shimanov took a 10 move 5 minute draw. ):

And the Aberzi GM, Vasif Durarbayli, and the Hungarian GM, Gabor Papp, did precisely the same thing. Quadruple boo!!!! ):

I was right on the pairing and colour but unfortunately ChessBomb isn't carrying the game. ):

                  Here are the final standings.

                  http://chessevents.com/2016/07/world...-open-section/

Congratulations of course to Razvan for his 3rd and final GM norm! He should be knocking on that 2500 door after this tournament and will surely be a GM in very short order!

Raja was just a 1/2 point back with 6/9. I see that the #36 finisher, IM Kaiqi Yang, is now listed under ON (previously listed under CHN). Kaiqi played in the 2016 Ontario Open so presumably is now Ontario based albeit his federation is still listed as China.

A very nice pay day for James Li in the U1800 section! The "1753" cited rating is James's highest CFC rating, 1653 (after the 2015 CYCC), plus an arbitrary 100 points. An exceptional performance!

                      Awesome Razvan!! Congratulations.

Yes - it looks like he won't even have to bump his lowest rated opponent to 2200 based on the posted ratings.

Today's 'Boston Globe' highlights the Ruifeng Li - Samuel Sevian game.
