  • CanBase updated database of Canadian games)

CanBase has been updated as of July 1.

There are now 130,075 games in the "By Year" files (games played in Canada since the 1870's)

There are now 42,065 games in the "By Player" files (games played by Canadian GM's, IM's, and selected other Canadian players world-wide)

I am always searching for more games - especially old, never-published games.

I mentioned this to you at a recent Grand Pacific Open in Victoria, B.C. - there ought to be a way for players to "will" a collection of their games to posterity. Maybe encourage players to put all of their games, un-annotated, on a USB stick in pgn format, so that when they pass away their lifetime games can become part of the multi-generational record of Canadian chess. Of course that presumes that players actually keep such a file - which all players don't - but I think many do.

When I was younger, I heard about Leafs fans putting their season tickets into their will. Hard to believe, I know. But then, I can remember Dave Keon and George Armstrong and a parade down Yonge Street in 1967. So let chess players begin a tradition of putting a little USB into their will and send it to some agreed upon benefactor (like Hugh) upon their death.

Of course, players could do this sort of thing sooner but might not want to.

Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.
