If Iran wins against Belarus (it's 2 - 1 and the last board looks like a draw) I don't think they can lose the 1st place.
To make it easier for Iran the Belarus player self-mated with 92 ... Kg4

Iran would have already won with a round to spare if the wont FIDE 1st tie-break was head-to-head result. However, total board points take priority here, meaning Russia still has a remote chance. Given the only 1/2 point Iran gave up was due to a forfeit, I'd have to say Iran is now a bigger betting favourite than Carlsen against Karjakin in their World Championship match. :)

India's Kaumandur Srihari Raghunandan played perhaps the most entertaining move of the tournament against Canada's Richard Chen, 19.dxe6?!!!. :)

Romania certainly gave Iran a good scare with an early win on board 4 and good or equal positions on the other 3 boards. In the end though, Iran prevailed 2.5-1.5 with an unfortunate blunder on move 104 when the evaluation went from +0.23 to +1,000, a one move mate. :(

August FIDE ratings are now available and Iran now sports the #3 U16 player in the world, Parham Maghsoodioo (2576), and the #3 U14 player in the world, Alireza Firouzja (2464). The latter is only 12 years old so is definitely a name to keep in mind.

In case you don't have a Facebook account this is the last post from the U16 Chess Olympiad GM Gergely Szabo FB page

Rounds 6 and 7 were double ones, which meant that preparation time for the afternoon round was really scarce. In the morning, we were dominating Finland right from the start; Joseph, Sam and Maili managed to convert their superior positions. Richard also had a nice position from the opening, but found himself in a losing position after a miscalculation. His resourceful defense managed to salvage half a point, though, so Canada won 3,5-0,5.
In the afternoon, I took a risky decision and rested Richard. Although it's unusual to rest the top board in a late phase of the tournament, other arguments weighed more in the balance - so I like to think of it as a "calculated risk". And the gamble almost paid off fully, since after the opening, Sam, Rohan and Maili were doing reasonably well, only Joseph being caught off-guard. His position got worse, and sadly, Maili also allowed her opponent to launch a devastating counterattack; however, Sam and Rohan managed to equalize the score, against a higher-rated opposition. Hungary 2 - Canada 2-2.
Round 8 was Team Canada's "power play" in this Olympiad. We managed to defeat the higher-ranked Austria (no.14) with the score of 3,5-0,5. Richard had a small advantage throughout the game, but his opponent managed to find adequate counterplay, so it fizzled out to a draw. Joseph and Rohan gradually outplayed their opponents with Black, and won good games, while Sam's opponent blundered in a superior position - and Sam didn't let the occasion slip away.
The final round saw us in a very comfortable position: even in case of a whitewash, we'd still place above our starting rank, a win assuring us a top 10 finish (by looking at the teams, a fantastic result) . We got India, another chess powerhouse - and it really looked like a "mission impossible". However, we believed we can do it, so the all-boys team went into the Arena willing to win. Truth be told, we were not very far: except for Richard, who fought a tough battle for survival right from the opening, the other three boards looked very good. Joseph managed to score a brilliant win (against an opponent rated 250 points higher) , but Sam and Rohan blundered in better positions. Experience has won another battle against ambition: India - Canada 3-1.
To sum up: a very nice experience, a good finish (20. place) , a few great games against strong opponents, a fantastic atmosphere in the team, and a team capable for achieveing even greater results in a couple of years. I would like to thank you for all who made this possible: players, parents, organizers, and last, but definitely not least, the CFC (especially Vlad Drkulec and Bob Gillanders) . It was a pleasure and a privilege to be the coach and captain of this team - I hope I will get this chance again in the future. Safe trips home everyone!
