  • Short game....

The shortest game I have seen for a while - in an "adult" tournament, that wasn't a cell phone forfeit. I have blanked out some details, so as not to embarrass the players. There is little difference between the ratings, and the loser has been playing in tournaments since at least 1987.

Gruesome. My personal record, played in June this year. Both players were about 1800. I ain't gonna say which colour I played...

Makes me feel better about the tournament game I lost to Hugh Small in 8 moves. Not much better....

        I've won lots of speed games with 8. Qh6, g6 9. Bc4, e6 ( ... gx5h 19 Baf7#)10 Qe2, Bg7 11 Nxf7 +-. The computer says my 8th move is better than yours, but recommends Qf3 on move 9 instead of Bc4.

Too bad these days nearly everyone plays 4. ... Bg4 which gives white less cheapo opportunities. But I still get victims on the internet.

That Bg5 line in the Dutch has some nasty traps, for both sides!

I have won the following game several times in blitz, but the first time was in a tournament game in 1973:

Interesting. I watched the game but didn't get in until after the opening. This 3. ... Nf6 seems to be topical and right now scores slightly better for black than Bg4 in my database. In July Ding Liren drew with Grischuk with the black pieces in this line and I suppose Grischuk played into this line because Carlsen beat him as white in June. MVL must have found an improvement somewhere for White since he got a much better game against Anand and only blew the game later on.

The Chessbase Livebook gives white only 43% after 2. ...Nf6 but percentages can be misleading. I limit my opening book database to players at 2400 and up and there White scores only slightly worse in this line than against Bg4.
