General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
This is a joke, right? Lesiege above Hansen? And the CFC wonders why their top GMs suddenly stop participating in the Olympiad.
It's not necessarily bad strategy. For example if you have two players who are both relatively good with the same colour it is better to separate them by a board than have them play on successive boards, imo.

Is the idea to win all the games when GM Bareev's black?
It shouldn't be SO surprising...
Victor also swapped Sambuev with Gerzhoy last time to maximize certain colours.
Obviously I don't know what the logistics were here, but as of a couple weeks ago (pre-great-result Le Siege has in Quebec), the Canadian National team was going in with 3 pretty amazing and consistent players (Bareev, Kovalyov and Hansen) and 2 players who... have not been performing up to their potential recently. Like Tom said, swapping a couple of players in what I consider the "border zone" makes a lot of sense to maximize colours of X or Y player, while allowing for a decent ladder of ratings in case everyone happens to start performing amazingly or above their pre-tournament expectations.
On a follow-up note, I am looking forward to seeing this Olympic team in action :)
I usually follow the elite tournaments live if they have live coverage with commentary somewhere, and will certainly do a bit of that with the Olympiad.
It would be expected that... Canada will not get much coverage by neutral broadcasters, unless we're playing against some top 5 team.
An idea would be, or at least I'd be interested in watching... could or would any strong player comment on our team's games? Same style that they do the elite tournaments? Covering ideas, tactics, opening themes relevant to the specific games? Be it live or video summary afterwards, would be pretty cool. Not sure where it would be done but it would have significant value over just replaying the games with an engine, or having to wait... 6-12 months for it to come out on the webzine.

And having the option of using Hansen on either board 3 or 4 seems useful.
Denis, I'm not sure I understand the significance of the board order Victor posted. Is the board order like a starting lineup that baseball managers are required to file, pre-game, with the umpire? Once the board order has been posted, are there restrictions on players being moved to different board numbers once the Olympiad has started?

Right. Once the board order is submitted, it's final. Bareev will always play Board 1. Kovalyov will always play Board 2 unless Bareev sits out, in which case everyone moves up a board, with Kovalyov on Board 1, etc... this "order" cannot be reversed.
4 players play at any given time, and 1 will always sit out. If Krnan sits, Hansen plays Board 4. If someone else sits, Hansen plays Board 3.
Smart decision. Victor Plotkin is a known strategic specialist. Putting Eric Hansen on board 4 guarantees at least 1 point every round. Alexander Lesiege on any board equates to 0 points.

After Lesieges very solid win at the Quebec Open, I wouldn't say that! Neither would I say "the other" that...... But at least we have the novel situation of discussing Canadian bred players, which is so difficult these days?

Sounds a little harsh. I thought his nomination on the team sort of came out of the blue given the options available and the fact he's been out for a while.
But his recent performance at the Quebec Open speaks for itself.
Putting Lesiege ahead of Hansen definitely sounds like a board order strategy to maximize results based on colors/pairings. Hansen on board 3/4 with the white pieces is just lethal.
What was wrong with the other "non-Quebec" option?
b) The Selection Committee shall select three players to be eligible for the National Team in a ranked order and three players to be eligible for the Women's team in a ranked order, taking into account the players' recent results, potential for improvement and such other factors as they consider relevant.
Why do you presume to know the information the committee had at their disposal in this or any other year?
Brian
Maybe IM Brian Hartman can explain what other information the committee had at their disposal this year.
I'm also wondering if this part of the CFC handbook will be updated before the next Olympiad.
905. The Selection Committee
The CFC Executive shall appoint a Selection Committee consisting of three well known and respected individuals who are of at least master strength and have knowledge of the Canadian chess community. [Motion 2012-V Barron/Zeromskis]
a) The Selection Committee shall be appointed no later than 180 days before the start of the Olympiad.
b) The Selection Committee shall select three players to be eligible for the National Team in a ranked order and three players to be eligible for the Women's team in a ranked order, taking into account the players' recent results, potential for improvement and such other factors as they consider relevant. These selections shall be made no later than 165 days before the start of the Olympiad. [Motion 2011L Bluvshtein/Zeromskis; amended by McDonald/von Keitz]
c) [Motion 2004-05 GL6 Harper/Feng] Neither member of the Selection Committee may play for the Canadian National Team in the Olympiad in question.
