  • Eugene Torre

Pestano writes in his chess column today re GM Eugene Torre (who turns 65 in November):

With this participation, Eugene holds the world record of playing in the Olympiad 23 times (and counting), a record that may not be broken in a thousand years.

A preliminary Google search as to whose record Eugene eclipsed proved futile. Does anyone know who would be #2 on most Olympiad appearances?

Lajos Portisch - see http://www.olimpbase.org/statistics/all_id03.html or http://www.olimpbase.org/ in general for Olympiad information.

Thanks, Stephen. I so indeed see that Lajos Portisch fills that bill and that Eugene Torre will also supass Portisch's record this Olympiad for most games played, currently trailing 260 to 259.

Speaking further of numbers, Stephen, and I'm sure you've had your fill of references to your namesake, the comedian, Steven Wright, I will forever love his joke about 8 being an odd number. :)

There is another famous Steven Wright (spelled with a 'v' instead of 'ph') around now, a major league baseball pitcher with the Boston Red Sox. He is having a great season; the 'odd' aspect is that he mainly throws a knuckleball! :)
