The Masters – Saturday, Oct. 1 to Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016

Rate of Play – 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the remaining moves, with 30 seconds added per move from the start.

For this third edition, Chess.com has taken on the role as host and sponsor of the even from Pokerstars. Chess.com is joined in this role by the Scheinberg family; the Isle of Man Department of Economic Development also assists. The prize fund of the tournament is £50,000, £12,000 going to first place (about €14,000 / $15,785 USD). Like at the Gibraltar Chess Festival, another very strong British open, there will also be sizable women's prizes, totaling £9,500 with £3,500 for allocated for first.

Talking about the Granda Zuniga – Lou Yiping game’s opening, they say that Granda Zuniga (b. in Peru in 1967) has never opened a chess book in his life and probably doesn’t have a computer.

A comment on Granda Zuniga winning the 7th Continental in 2012:

“I'm in real awe of Julio Granda Zuniga. One of the few talents who came without an armoury of books, training or computers and showed that he is no lesser. Congratulations Julio!!”

The Isle of Man is located between Ireland and Great Britain in the Irish Sea.

The Isle of Man is NOT part of the United Kingdom. The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency, which means that it is technically a possession of the crown directly, not of the UK. It is also not a territory of the UK like Bermuda or the Falkland Islands. The British didn’t technically conquer Mann in the same way they did Ireland or other countries in the empire. The Lord of Mann was the titular ruler of the island until 1765 when the feudal rights were purchased by the crown and the title was transferred to George I.

Today, the Queen still has the title of Lord of Mann (even though she is a woman, she is still known as Lord, not Lady). When doing the Loyal Toast on the Isle of Man, they toast the Lord of Mann, not the Queen or King. They do use the British Pound and the UK does have the responsibility of the defense of the island. They are not members of the European Union. Because it is not part of the UK, it is often used as a tax haven for the British.

Let’s see – what else? Mann is the motorcycle racing capital of the world and the Bee Gees are from the Isle of Man, not Australia. And that is all I know about the IOM!

I was there in 1985 for the British Backgammon Championship, which I won worth £10,000.
That was the year they finally removed from the statutes a law which had made it Legal to kill a Scotsman on Midsummers Day (August 15)

Every Spring they have an international MC race through the streets of Douglas, the capital.
The problem there is the streets wind through a residential area where the properties are fenced in with a ten foot stone fences. A motorcyclist missing a turn at high speed hits the wall - SPLAT ! Ouch.

Briefly, Jorden was born in 1999 in Utrecht. He comes from a chess family - his great grand grandfather is A.E. van Foreest, who was three-times Dutch champion. Alexei Shirov stays atop the tournament ladder with a victory over Vidit.

It looked like Caruana had a very bad game at one point against Salem, but that ended in a draw.

A note about Salem Saleh. He was born in 1993 in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates. When he won the Asian Continental last year, he was working with Alexey Dreev and his coach, Ivan Sokolov.

He has played for the UAE’s national team on the top board in every Olympiad since 2008. He scored 6.5 out of 9 at Baku 2016 losing only to Wojtaszek of Poland in Rd 2.

Wesley So beat Granda Zuniga, Van Foreest drew with Fressinet and Peter Leko beat Lawrence Trent.

I have always been puzzled as to why one would take a bye in a tournament. At the IoM, Alexei Shirov won his first four games and immediately after Round Four finished, asked for a bye for Round Five. He got half a point and did not play.

At Wijk aan Zee in 2010 he started off beating Leko, Caruana, van Wely, Tiviakov and Smeets and then won no more games after that. Carlsen took the tournament followed by Kramnik and Shirov.

Simon Williams thinks he may be superstitious, Mike Klein thinks the 44-year old may need a rest day. Others wonder if he is avoiding the round so that he will not have to play Wesley So.

In any case, he got his bye and tomorrow plays Pavel Eljanov (2741), who now also has 4.5 points.

Hikaru Nakamura plays Elisabeth Paehtz tomorrow. She is 31 years old and the strongest woman player in Germany
When young, she didn’t have to look far for early coaching. Her father, Thomas Paehtz, was a grandmaster who on three occasions tied for first at the German (or East German) Championship. Elisabeth herself won the German U11 Championship aged 9, became the youngest ever "adult" German Champion in 1999 and went on to crown her junior achievements by winning the World U18 and U20 titles.

Caruana and Eljanov are above the rest and meet in tomorrow’s round. On second board is Nakamura-So, which should be entertaining. And Elisabeth Paehtz is against Hou Yifan. Today Hou lost to Harika.

Santosh Gujrathi Vidit’s name has kept turning up in various tournaments this year. He is an Indian grandmaster born in 1994.
His talent is compared to that of Harikrishna.

An Indian sports page had this about him in 2009:

The young champion gives the credit for his success to his teachers, especially IM Anup Deshmukh, IM Roktim Bandopadhyay and GM Alon Greenfeld of Israel. “I learned a lot under Anup sir in the initial years when I won my age group titles in the Nationals. I went to Nagpur to take coaching from him,” he said. “Later I was exposed to the coaching of Roktim Bandopadhyay but I made the best development under Alon Greenfeld. His coaching helped me take my ELO rating beyond 2300,” Vidit says, adding that a Sports Authority of India scholarship helped him get the training of the Israeli GM.

He is playing David Howell tomorrow.
