  • 0-0-0+ winning a R on b2 (or b7)

This position isn't as rare as I thought. My database of 6 million+ games shows 30 games with White having the chance to play 0-0-0+ including 3 draws and 5 wins for Black. There are 26 games with Black having the chance to play 0-0-0+ - 4 draws and 7 wins for White. But it turns out - after looking at the games in which the "wrong" side won - it's due to factors such as (1) it being the other side to move when the position occurs. (2) The K and/or R have already moved. (3) The R on b2/b7 is defended. (4) Other pieces prevent legal castling. (I used Chessbase to set up the position - telling it to search for positions with K's on e1,d8 /d1,e8, WR on a1 and BR on b2 (or BR on a8 and WR on b7) and nothing on d1 to d7 (or d8 to d2) and nothing on b1 to d1 (or b8 to d8) - but there is only so much you can do with Chessbase).

I once had the pleasure of mating my opponent with 0-0-0. Rd1 would have worked too, but who could resist...

I remember seeing that game live at the Montréal Chess Club. The move is incredibly easy to miss, especially as black was a pawn down and white's position is nothing special without 17.0-0-0+

I remember seeing this trick in a speed game I was watching between two masters at the Toronto Chess Club back in the late sixties or early seventies. I think Day was one of the players but that's a pretty fuzzy memory and I couldn't swear to it. But the pattern was so striking that I always remembered it, although I never got the chance to pull it off myself.
