  • CFC by the numbers

Just finishing some awesome chess info graphics about the CFC and I want to get an accurate number of our higher titled players.

How many GMs, IMs and WIMs currently as CFC members?

And are CFC memberships Honorary for those titles?

    Thanks in advance!

You can get those numbers from the FIDE Ratings page. Do a listing for Canada with titled players and do a manual count. You can include active only or active and inactive. They are all Honorary CFC members.

You can see a list of all Canada's GM's and IM's (living and deceased) on the Canbase "Players" page:

Must be going blind cause I don't see Peter Biyiasis on the GM list.

Although I now wear reading glasses, I'll double check.

Peter Biyiasis is a US citizen...that's why he doesn't appear.

Peter learned chess, became Canada's third GM entirely on his own efforts, as did Suttles and Spraggett, and played all his international chess for Canada. His only international appearance for the US was as captain at Malta 1980 of the women's team, of which his wife was a member. He is a true Canadian GM and belongs on the list.

Biyiasis actually does appear on the "other noted Canadians" group with an asterisk beside his name explaining the situation.

                      It's "Biyiasas," not "Biyiasis."

The CFC also maintains a list of titled players (perhaps a year out of date)

However to answer Neil's question of current CFC members - you would have to take those with an address in Canada, as I believe we only include those in our official membership numbers. Bob G might be able to correct me on this.

Thanks Fred! I'm super happy this is moving forward and we can get to some amazing graphics of where the CFC is now.

I've poured over these numbers since Bob A. wrote his post back on June 28 2016. Even tho I am 100% disappointed in so many many CFC short comings (all of which can all be corrected IMHO) at the end of the day the CFC is blessed with an amazing % of juniors, with the vast majority of Juniors C class and under.

To me these Juniors, and their parents, are there for the game.

Healthy stuff in so many regards.
